............... HEADLINES El Makssoud’s 19 points leads UQAM to men’s basketball victory over Gaiters February 12, 2010 MONTREAL - Adil El Makssoud’s 19 points led the UQAM Citadins to a 79-59 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League men’s action tonight at the UQAM Sports Centre. The Citadins broke the game open with a 14-2 run to end the first quarter, as they cruised to the victory. The Gaiters’ loss, their third straight, drops them to 4-7 in league play (9-14 overall, 7-14 CIS), and leaves them tied for fourth place with idle Concordia. UQAM improves to 9-4 in league play (14-13 overall, 13-9 CIS) and is four points ahead of second-place Laval. El Makssoud led all scorers with 19 points, on 6-for-8 shooting, and grabbed a game-high six rebounds. Three other Citadins scored in double figures, led by Jules Diagne’s 15 points, with Eric Côté-Kougnima scoring 13 and Kevin Bitondo adding 12. For the Gaiters, Tim Hunter (Baie d’Urfé, Que.) scored 15 points, one off his career high, as he went 6-for-10 from the field. Fifth-year forward Damon Thomas-Anderson (Verdun, Que.) scored 14. Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) led the Gaiters with five rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter. The teams traded quick baskets in the game’s opening minutes, as Tim Hunter gave the Gaiters an early 8-6 lead. The lead was short-lived, as the Citadins took the lead at 9-8 two minutes later, and embarked on a 14-2 run to end the first quarter, as the Gaiters scored only one field goal in the last 7:36 of the period. UQAM led 20-10 after the first quarter. After UQAM ran their lead out to 26-12, the Gaiters mounted an 8-2 run, bookended by baskets by Thomas-Anderson, to cut the gap to eight points at 28-20. That was as close as the Gaiters would get, however, as a 6-0 UQAM run restored the 14-point lead. A three-pointer by Jesse Feith (Chambly, Que.) in the dying seconds of the half narrowed the halftime gap to 44-34. The Gaiters kept pace with UQAM through the third quarter, but could not cut into the Citadins’ lead, as UQAM led 62-51 after the quarter. The Citadins pulled away in the fourth quarter, using a 10-0 run over 2 ½ minutes to stretch the lead out to 20 points. The Gaiters shot 36.9% from the field (24-65), while the Citadins hit 50.9% of their shots (28-55). UQAM outrebounded Bishop’s 34-25. The Gaiters return home tomorrow night to face the Laval Rouge et Or (13-17, 11-14 CIS, 7-6 QUBL) at the Mitchell Gym.
