February 13, 2010

Box Score

LENNOXVILLE – A difficult third quarter proved to be the difference as the Bishop’s Gaiters fell 74-58 to the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec University Basketball League action today at the Mitchell Gym. The Gaiters were outscored 22-5 in the period, as Laval turned a 34-27 halftime lead into a 54-32 bulge. The Gaiters made only two field goals in the period, as they went over four minutes without scoring. With the loss, the Gaiters fall to 4-8 in league play (9-15 overall, 7-15 CIS), and remain tied for fourth in the QUBL with idle Concordia. Laval improves to 8-6 in the league (14-17 overall) and moves back into a tie for second place with McGill.

Jean-Philippe Renaud led Laval with 14 points, while Kevin Cravant and Jerome Turcotte-Routhier posted double-doubles with identical lines of 12 points and 11 rebounds each. Turcotte-Routhier also added a team-high seven assists. François-Olivier Gagnon-Hébert’s ten points rounded out the scoring leaders.

The Gaiters had three players in double figures, led by rookie Onnex Blackwood’s (Toronto, Ont.) 15 points and five steals. Ryan Steele (Toronto, Ont.) came off the bench to score 13 points on 6-for-10 shooting, while Oraine Green (Toronto, Ont.) added 12 points. Second-year swingman Tim Hunter led the Gaiters with 11 rebounds, seven assists and a pair of blocks.

Laval led throughout the game, and broke it open early as they used a pair of runs to turn their 6-4 lead after 5:00 to a 23-11 edge after the end of the quarter. The Gaiters rebounded in the second quarter, as a Blackwood three-pointer cut the gap to 27-19 with 6:15 left in the half. After Laval pulled out to a 32-19 lead, the Gaiters pulled to within seven points at halftime, as Blackwood’s buzzer-beater layup cut the lead to 34-27.

However, the third quarter put an end to any Gaiter comeback hopes. A Damon Thomas-Anderson (Verdun, Que.) layup at 7:44 made the score 41-29, but the Gaiters did not score again until the three-minute mark, while Laval ran up eight unanswered points. A 7-0 run in the last 2:00 of the quarter pulled Laval out to 24 points, their largest lead of the evening. The Gaiters were 2-for-12 from the field in the period. Laval cruised to the victory from that point, as they Gaiters could get no closer than 14 points in the final quarter.
