January 30, 2010

QUEBEC CITY – The Bishop’s Gaiters let a ten-point third-quarter lead slip away as they dropped a 78-71 decision to the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec University Basketball League men’s action tonight at the PEPS in Quebec City. The Gaiters fall to 9-13 overall (7-13 CIS, 4-6 QUBL), while Laval improves to 13-14 (11-11 CIS, 7-3 QUBL).

The Gaiters were led by Tim Hunter’s 16 points and seven rebounds, both season highs, while Ryan Steele scored 15 points on 7-for-13 shooting. Two other Gaiters scored in double figures, as Hermon Tesfaghebriel scored 13 points and Oraine Green netted ten.

Jérôme Turcotte-Routhier led Laval with 23 points, while Etienne Labrecque added 21 and François-Olivier Gagnon-Hébert scored 14 and added a team-high seven rebounds.

The Gaiters got off to quick start, as they ran out to a 10-2 lead before the game was 90 seconds old, capped by the first of Green’s two three-pointers on the night. The Gaiters led 26-20 after a fast-paced opening quarter.

The Rouge et Or tied the game at 34-34 halfway through the second quarter, the end of a 10-0 run, but Hunter put an end to the threat as he scored six straight points for the Gaiters, including his only three-pointer of the night, making the score 40-36 with 2:47 left in the second. The Gaiters held on to lead 44-42 at halftime.

Ryan Steele gave the Gaiters their largest lead of the night when he made the score 55-45 with 4:15 left in the third quarter, capping a 10-1 Gaiters run. The Gaiters held Laval without a field goal for more than five minutes in the quarter. That was to be the high-water mark for Bishop’s, however, as Laval started to chip away at the lead, dropping it to six points at 60-54 after the third quarter.

Laval completed their comeback with an 8-0 run at the start of the fourth, as Gagnon-Hébert’s layup to give Laval their first lead of the night at 62-60. After a pair of Tesfaghebriel buckets tied the game at 64-64, Laval rattled off seven straight points to take a 71-64 lead. A thunderous dunk by Steele pulled the Gaiters to within one possession at 71-68 with 1:58 to go, but they could draw no closer.

The Gaiters are idle next week, but return to action on Friday, February 12 when they visit the UQAM Citadins (12-12, 11-8 CIS, 7-3 QUBL) in Montreal. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
