MONTREAL - A double-double by Onnex Blackwood (Toronto, Ont.) led the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 74-61 win over the Concordia Stingers in Quebec University Basketball men’s action tonight. Blackwood scored 24 points, ten in the first quarter, and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Gaiters picked up their third straight win, and improved their record to 9-11 overall, 4-4 in the league (7-11 vs. CIS). Concordia drops to 8-14 overall (8-10 vs. CIS, 2-6 QUBL).

Blackwood’s 24 points and 11 rebounds were both game highs, while three other Gaiters were in double figures. Damon Thomas-Anderson (Verdun ,Que.) came off the bench to score 12 points, while Jeremy Leonard-Smith scored 11 and Hermon Tesfaghebriel added ten.

For Concordia, Pierre Thompson and Evens Lacroche each scored 15 points, with Laroche grabbing a team-high seven rebounds.

After a tight first quarter finished with the Gaiters up 19-17, Bishop’s pulled out to a 32-23 lead at halftime, as they held Concordia without a field goal for the last 4:17 of the half and finished on a 6-0 run.

The Gaiters started the third quarter right where they left off, as six points by Tesfaghebriel keyed an 8-2 run that stretched the lead to 15 points at 40-25. However, the Stingers rebounded late in the quarter, as they went on a 14-0 run to take the lead at 46-44, their first lead since late in the first quarter. Thomas-Anderson put the Gaiters back on top with five straight points in the last minute of the quarter, and a buzzer-beater by Jeremy Leonard Smith put Bishop’s up 54-48 after three periods.

The Gaiters pulled away in the fourth quarter, using a 6-2 run to put the lead into double digits at 60-50 with 6:31 to play. Less than a minute later, two of Concordia’s starters – Laroche and James Clark – had both fouled out, putting an end to any thoughts of a Stinger comeback. Bishop’s led by as many as 17 points, and cruised to the 13-point victory.

The game was a physical affair, with the teams combining for 52 fouls (26 each). The Gaiters went 15-for-26 from the free-throw line, while Concordia was 12 for 31. The Gaiters shot 43% from the field (27-63), while holding the Stingers to 39% (22-57). The Gaiters outrebounded Concordia 35-30.

Bishop’s next action is on Friday, January 29, when the Gaiters will host the McGill Redmen at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
