HEADLINES Gaiters work overtime to down Citadins 76-69 in Men's Basketball January 15, 2010 LENNOXVILLE – Onnex Blackwood's 20 points led the Gaiters as they came from behind to score a 76-69 (OT) victory over the UQAM Citadins. Blackwood forced overtime as his layup made the score 61-61, capping a Gaiters comeback from nine points down in the fourth quarter, and he made three key free throws late in the extra period to ice the game. Blackwood went 7-for-13 from the field, and 6-for-12 from the line, and made a game-high four steals. Hermon Tesfagehbriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) scored 14 points, while Oraine Green (Toronto, Ont.) added 12 for the Gaiters, who have won four of their past five games overall. Tim McAleenan (Sussex, N.B.) led the Gaiters with seven rebounds. UQAM was led by Gregory St-Amand’s game-high 22 points, while Jules Diagne scored 15 points, and Adil El Makssoud added 14. St-Amand was one rebound short of a double-double, finishing with nine. The Gaiters opened the game in emphatic fashion, with a Tesfaghebriel dunk on the game’s first possession and took an early 8-0 lead. The Citadins tied the game at 10-10, and led 14-13 after the first quarter. The Citadins led by as many as seven points in the second, but the Gaiters ended the half on a 13-2 run to take a 34-30 halftime lead. After taking the lead at 40-38, UQAM led through most of the rest of the second half. The Citadins led 50-46 after the third quarter, and Plesius gave them their biggest lead of the night at 59-50 with just under six minutes to play. The game changed on a poster-worthy dunk by Ryan Steele (Toronto, Ont.) that made the score 59-52, launching the Gaiters on an 11-2 run. The run culminated with Blackwood’s game-tying layup that made the score 61-61. The overtime was all Gaiters, as they ran out to a 69-62 lead, highlighted by Tesfaghebriel’s second dunk of the night. UQAM pulled to within two points at 69-67, but the Gaiters made five free throws down the stretch to put the game away. The Gaiters shot 56.6% from the field (30-53), while UQAM went 48.2% (27-56). UQAM outrebounded Bishop’s 34-29, but committed 21 turnovers, to the Gaiters’ 17. The Gaiters (8-11, 6-11 CIS, 3-4 QUBL) return to action on Friday night, as they visit the Concordia Stingers.
