..... HEADLINES Gaiters fall to nationally-ranked Lakehead in Wesmen Classic Championship
December 30, 2009 WINNIPEG – The Lakehead Thunderwolves used a combination of physical play and strong three-point shooting to defeat the Bishop’s Gaiters, 72-58, in the championship game of the 2009 Wesmen Classic in Winnipeg. The tenth-ranked Thunderwolves hit 11 shots from beyond the arc and held Bishop’s to a 34% field goal percentage. The Gaiters started strongly, taking a 13-4 lead midway through the first quarter. However, Lakehead responded with an 11-2 run to tie the game at 15-15, and took a 21-19 lead after the first quarter. Tim Hunter’s three-pointer gave Bishop’s a 22-21 lead, but Lakehead responded with a 7-0 run to take a lead they would never relinquish. The Thunderwolves stretched their lead to 43-31 at halftime, on the strength of five second-quarter three-pointers. Lakehead put the game away early in the third quarter, as they held Bishop’s without a field goal for more than five minutes, stretching their lead to 22 points at 53-31. Four points by Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) with two minutes left pulled the Gaiters to within 13 points, but they could draw no closer, and the Thunderwolves cruised to the victory. The Thunderwolves shot 48% from the field, to the Gaiters’ 34%. Lakehead was 11-for-25 (44%) from behind the three-point line, tying the most allowed by Bishop’s this year. Lakehead outrebounded the Gaiters 36-35 and blocked seven shots. Lakehead’s Cameron Hornby led all players with 18 points, including five three-pointers, and was named tournament MVP. Yoosrie Salhia scored 13 points, grabbed eight rebounds, made four blocks, and was named a tournament all-star. Jamie Searle and Andrew Hackner also picked up eight rebounds each. For the Gaiters, Ryan Steele (Toronto, Ont.) led with 14 points, as he went 5-for-7 from the field. Tim Hunter (Baie d’Urfé, Que.) scored 11 points, while Tesfaghebriel added 10. Onnex Blackwood (Toronto, Ont.) led the Gaiters with eight rebounds. Blackwood and Hunter were named to the Tournament All-Star team.
