............... HEADLINES Blackwood's double-double leads Gaiters to 68-62 win over Winnipeg in men's hoops December 28, 2009
WINNIPEG – Onnex Blackwood’s (Toronto, Ont.) double-double led the Bishop’s Gaiters Men’s Basketball team to a 68-62 win over the host Winnipeg Wesmen in the quarter-finals of the Wesmen Classic. The rookie guard grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and led the Gaiters with 15 points. The game was a choppy, defensive battle, with neither team able to find their scoring rhythm. Winnipeg led 32-30 after a first half that included six ties and eight lead changes. The Gaiters shot 30% in the first half, while Winnipeg hit 33% of their shots. The third quarter continued to be tight until the Gaiters put together a 7-0 run in 39 seconds late in the period. Blackwood’s layup tied the game at 47-47 with 1:26 left, and he made two free throws 18 seconds later to put the Gaiters in front. Fifth-year forward Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) capped the run with a three-pointer, three of his nine points in the quarter, giving the Gaiters a 52-47 lead. Winnipeg came back to tie the game at 62-62 with 1:54 left, but Tesfaghebriel put the Gaiters back in front with his shot from down low, and a layup from Alex Audette-Genier (Montreal, Que.) and a pair of free throws by Blackwood cemented the victory. In addition to Blackwood’s 15 points, two other Gaiters scored in double figures, as Tesfaghebriel scored 14 points – all in the second half – and Damon Thomas-Anderson (Verdun, Que.) came off the bench to score 13. Blackwood’s 12 rebounds led all players, while Thomas-Anderson grabbed seven, and Oraine Green (Toronto, Ont.) had six, a career high. Winnipeg had four players in double digits, led by Peter Lomuro’s game-high 16 points. James Horaska and Nick Lother scored 11 each, while Mike James scored 10 before fouling out in the fourth quarter. James and Eric Zimmerman each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. The Gaiters shot 37.1% from the field overall, but held Winnipeg to 31.8%. The Gaiters were 18-for-34 from the free-throw line, while Winnipeg was 18-for-29. The Gaiters out-rebounded Winnipeg 48-44, while both teams committed 15 turnovers. With the win, Bishop’s (5-10, 4-10 CIS, 1-4 QUBL) advances to the semifinals of the Wesmen Classic, and will play tomorrow at 6 p.m. (7 p.m. Eastern) against either the Manitoba Bisons or the Valley City State (N.D.) Vikings. |
