THE RECORDS: The Gaiters are 4-10 overall, 3-10 vs. CIS teams and 1-4 in league play after picking up a split of their last two games before Christmas.

LAST TIME OUT: The Gaiters split their last two games, a 77-71 win over Concordia on Nov. 27, followed by a 75-63 loss at UQAM the next night. In the Concordia win, Onnex Blackwood led the Gaiters with 21 points and five assists, while Hermon Tesfaghebriel added six rebounds. In the UQAM game, Blackwood again led the Gaiters with 13 points, five rebounds and two assists, while Oraine Green also scored 13 points.

UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY: This a rare trip to Western Canada for the Gaiters, as they have not played a game west of Ontario in the past 15 years. As well, most of the Gaiters’ potential opposition this week will be new to them, as the Gaiters have not faced the Wesmen in the past 15 years, and have never played Thompson Rivers, Valley City or Minot State. Bishop’s last played Manitoba on October 21, 2007, a 79-64 win at the Eric Garland Tournament in Fredericton, N.B. They last played Lakehead on January 4, 2009 at the Rod Shoveller Tournament in Halifax, losing 78-60.

SCOUTING THE WESMEN: The Winnipeg Wesmen have gone 1-13 overall (1-13 vs. CIS, 0-9 Canada West) so far this year. Their sole win of the year was an 86-63 win over Brock on October 17, and they have lost 11 games since then. They are led by a pair of veterans, Peter Lomuro and Nick Lother, who have averaged 14.9 and 14.0 points (regular season) respectively.

SCOUTING THE BISONS & VIKINGS: The Manitoba Bisons are 6-10 overall (5-10 vs. CIS, 3-6 Canada West), with losses in three of their past four games. The Valley City State Vikings, an NAIA school from North Dakota, are 9-4 overall (1-1 Dakota Athletic Conference) and come into the tournament on a three-game winning streak.

ONNEX-PECTED: The Gaiters’ leading scorer through the fall has been rookie guard Onnex Blackwood. He has averaged 12.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game, highlighted by 21 points in the Gaiters’ win over Concordia on November 27. He has scored double figured in four of the Gaiters’ five league games this year.

ORAINE MAN: Oraine Green is the other Gaiters’ rookie to crack the starting lineup. The transfer from Division II Delta State has started 13 games at point guard, and is averaging 10.9 points per game, and

HELLO, MY NAME IS...: The Gaiters boast seven newcomers in their lineup, led by starters Oraine Green and Onnex Blackwood. Three of the new Gaiters (Green, Pat Shier and Chris East) are transfers, while Blackwood, Jamil Abiad and Jeremy Leonard-Smith are true freshmen.

FIVE ALIVE: The Gaiters also boast a trio of fifth-year players, as Hermon Tesfaghebriel, Damon Thomas-Anderson and Tim McAleenan all are finishing out their eligibility this year. Tesfaghebriel has averaged 12.0 points and 6.4 rebounds this year and is shooting 54% from the field. Thomas-Anderson has only played nine games, averaging 6.8 points and 5.0 rebounds and 22.3 minutes. McAleenan, who is often the first off the bench, averages 5.4 points and 1.8 rebounds and is shooting 41% overall.

BLOCK PARTY: The Gaiters lead the QUBL with 2.4 blocks per game in the regular season, led by four from Damon Thomas-Anderson and three each from Tim Hunter and Hermon Tesfaghebriel.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters return to league play on Wednesday, January 6, 2010, when they will visit the McGill Redmen. Tipoff in Montreal is set for 8 p.m.
