TWO GAITERS NAMED TO QUFL ALL-STAR TEAM (Version française ci-dessous) November 2, 2009 LENNOXVILLE – Two members of the Bishop's Gaiters have been named to the Quebec University Football League All-Star team, as announced by the league office in Montreal yesterday. The Gaiters' two all-stars are kick returner Steven Turner (Brampton, Ont.), who was a unanimous selection for the second straight year, while cornerback Nick Poloniato (Hamilton, Ont.) is a first-time honouree. Turner, a fourth-year slotback and kick returner, was a unanimous selection as a Kick Returner for the second straight year, and is an all-star for the third year in a row. This year, Turner led the CIS with an average of 20.4 yards per punt return, and scored two punt return touchdowns. He also led the QUFL with an average of 21.4 yards per kickoff return. "Turner gets the ultimate respect from the opposition," said Gaiters' Head Coach Leroy Blugh. "Teams just do not kick the football to him." Poloniato, a fourth-year cornerback, is a first-time all-star. This year, Poloniato led the CIS with eight passes knocked down, and added one interception. Poloniato currently has 14 interceptions in his career, two off the school record of 16. "It is great to see Nick finally getting some recognition," said Blugh. "He faces the top receivers in our league week in and week out, and he has done a great job." The Gaiters (4-4) will visit the Montreal Carabins (5-3) on Saturday at 12:30 in a QUFL semifinal. The QUFL major award winners will be announced on Monday. La ligue a fait cette annonce hier. Les deux étoiles des Gaiters sont le spécialiste de retours Steven Turner, qui est un choix unanime, et Nick Poloniato, qui a été nommé comme demi de coin. Turner, un demi inséré et spécialiste de retour des bottés de quatrième année, est un choix unanime pour la deuxième année consécutive. Il s'agit son troisième nomination au sein de l'équipe d'étoiles. Il a amassé un moyen de 20,4 verges par retour de dégagement, la meilleur total au Canada, incluant deux touchés. Aux bottés d'envoi, il a mené la LFUQ avec un moyen de 21,4 verges par retour. « Les adversaires lui donne la respect ultime, a dit Leroy Blugh, l'entraineur-chef des Gaiters. Les équipes ne bottent jamais le ballon vers lui. » Poloniato, un demi de coin de quatrième année, a reçu sa première nomination. Cette année, Poloniato a rabattu huit passes - la meilleur totale au Canada - ainsi qu’une interception. Pendant son carrière, Poloniato a cumulé 14 interceptions (le record d’équipe est 16). « C'est merveilleux qu’on l'a finalement reconnu, a dit Blugh. Il joue contre les meilleurs receveurs de notre ligue chaque semaine, et il fait du excellent travail. » Les Gaiters (4-4) joueront une demi-finale de la LFUQ contre les Carabins de l'Université de Montréal (5-3) ce samedi.
