October 31, 2009 LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Jesse Andrews’ (Pickering, Ont.) seven-yard touchdown run with 26 seconds left gave the Bishop’s Gaiters a 40-38 victory over the Concordia Stingers in Quebec University Football League action today at Coulter Field. The 1,973 wind-swept fans at Coulter Field saw a wild contest that featured 78 points, eight lead changes, and 972 combined yards of total offence. Andrews’ run was the culmination of a drive that started with 1:26 left in the game on the Gaiters’ 33, with Bishop’s trailing by six. The veteran quarterback, in his 30th consecutive start, skilfully drove the Gaiters in 11 plays, making a series of medium-range completions to Dave Soucy (Sherbrooke, Que.) and Olivier Mongeau (Sorel, Que.). On third and goal from the Concordia 7, Andrews dropped back to pass, evaded the clutches of Cory Greenwood and J.P. Binette, and scrambled towards the corner of end zone. “I was just pumping my legs,” said Andrews. “I did not want to go down.” His touchdown tied the game at 38, with Josh Maveety’s (Kingston, Ont.) convert providing the game-winning point. Shawn Gore (Toronto, Ont.) scored a pair of first-half touchdowns to stake the Gaiters to a 22-19 halftime lead. The Gaiters’ defence chipped in with a pair of touchdowns, on interception returns by Junior Turner (Brampton, Ont.) and Zak Buis (Delta, B.C.). A Maveety field goal and two kickoff singles, along with four conversions by Justin Conn (New Maryland, N.B.), rounded out the scoring for Bishop’s. The Gaiters’ win obscured an outstanding day for Stingers’ quarterback Robert Mackay, who completed 34 of 47 passes for 480 yards and four touchdowns. While Mackay posted the sixth-highest single game total in QUFL history, set the QUFL all-time single season passing record with 2,739 yards and tied for the single-season mark in touchdown passes with 18, his three interceptions proved costly. Two of his touchdowns were to Cory Watson, who caught 11 passes for 182 yards. The other Concordia touchdowns were on receptions by Ely Aramouni and Blair Yachetti, while two René Paredes field goals and a pair of safety touches rounded out their scoring. Concordia outgained Bishop’s 649 to 323, and made 32 first downs to the Gaiters’ 21. The Stingers turned the ball over three times, to the Gaiters’ one. Cedric Ferdinand led the Stingers’ rushing with 148 yards on 21 carries, while Dan Rodrigues caught seven passes for 109 yards. For the Gaiters, Andrews finished 17-for-32 for 196 yards and two touchdown passes. He was also the Gaiters’ leading rusher, with six carries for 54 yards including the game-winning score. Gore led Bishop’s with seven receptions for 84 yards, while Mongeau made six catches for 74 yards and Soucy had two for 29. Defensively, Justin Conn led all players with ten solo tackles, including two for loss, while Harrison Maloney had seven tackles and a knockdown. For Concordia, Jahmall Rickman made 6.5 tackles, while Nicolas Arsenault-Hum made 4.5 tackles and an interception. The Gaiters (4-4) finish in third place in the QUFL, and will visit the No. 9-ranked Montreal Carabins (5-3) in one QUFL semifinal. Despite the loss, the Stingers (3-5) finish in fourth place, and will visit the No. 1-ranked Laval Rouge et Or (7-1).
