LENNOXVILLE,
Que. – A six-yard catch by Justin Conn keyed the Bishop’s Gaiters to a
21-16 upset of the No. 4-ranked Montreal Carabins in Quebec University
Football League action today at Coulter Field. The 1,573 in attendance
saw Conn score on a perfectly-executed fake field goal, the highlight of
a day that belonged to the Gaiters’ defence and special teams. Conn,
a
fourth-year linebacker who who became
the Gaiters’ field goal kicker last week, was lined up to attempt a
14-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter. Instead, he
broke down the left side, where Olivier Mongeau found him wide open, and
he leapt into the end zone for his first career touchdown and a 14-0
Gaiters lead. Conn accounted for nine of the Gaiters’ 21 points, with a
touchdown, two converts, and a single. After a Pierre-Paul Gélinas field goal
cut into Bishop’s lead, Kyle Exumé blocked a Gélinas punt, putting
Bishop’s on Montreal’s 9-yard-line with 29 seconds left in the second.
Jesse Andrews found Duraney White on the next play, giving the Gaiters a
21-3 halftime bulge. That was Andrews’ second touchdown pass of the day,
after having connected with Shawn Gore in the first quarter. Kyle Exume blocks a McGill
punt, setting up the Gaiters' final touchdown. (Perry Beaton

half, on a Rotrand Sené one-yard plunge in the third, and a pair of
field goals pulled Montreal back to within five with 8:43 left. However,
the Gaiters defence held on Montreal’s next three possessions, clinching
the game with 1:03 left when Alexandre Nadeau-Piuze’s third down pass
sailed over the head of Kevin Rivet. While Montreal outgained Bishop’s
322-231, the Carabins were felled by seven turnovers, including four
fumbles. Conversely, the Gaiters only turned the ball over once. The
Gaiters held a slight edge in time of possession, 30:16-29:44, but held
the ball for 9:43 of the fourth quarter to keep Montreal off the board. For Bishop’s, Andrews was 13-for-21 for
136 yards, while Jordan Heather was 2-for-3 for 20 yards in a brief
second-quarter stint. Matt Burke was the Gaiters’ leading rusher, with
12 carries for 57 yards. For Montreal, Sené ran 21 times for 136
yards and a major, while Marc-Olivier Brouillette was 8-for-14 for 104
yards. He left early in the third quarter with an injury, and was
replaced by Nadeau-Piuze, who was 4-for-12 for 64 yards. Frank Bruno led
all receivers with four catches for 68 yards. Defensively, Nick Rigg led the Gaiters
with five solo tackles and an interception. He had an apparent touchdown
called back due to a penalty on his interception return. Jermaine
Lewis-Parris recorded 5.5 tackles (3 solo, 5 assisted), while Tyler
Jutras had five tackles (3 solo, 4 assisted) and a forced fumble. For Montreal, Martin Gagné recorded a
game-high 6.5 tackles, including a sack – one of four by the Carabins.
Jonathan Beaulieu-Richard made five tackles including two for losses and
a sack. The Gaiters (3-4) will qualify for the
QUFL playoffs if they defeat the Concordia Stingers (3-4) next Saturday
at Coulter Field. Montreal (4-3) remains alone in second place in the
QUFL, one game ahead of McGill, Concordia, Sherbrooke, and Bishop’s. The
Carabins close out the season next Saturday at home against the
Sherbrooke Vert & Or (3-4).
