THIS WEEK: The Bishop’s Gaiters (2-4) return home to face the No. 4-ranked Montreal Carabins (4-2).

FOLLOW, FOLLOW: Fans can follow all Gaiters action at http://www.ubishops.ca/gaiters or at http://www.twitter.com/BishopsGaiters.

THE RECORDS: The Gaiters are 2-4, with a win over McGill in addition to last week’s victory over StFX. The Carabins are 4-2, having fell 34-15 to the Sherbrooke Vert et Or last week.

LAST TIME OUT: A pair of touchdown runs by fourth-year quarterback Jesse Andrews led the Gaiters to a 33-12 victory over the No. 6-ranked St. Francis Xavier X-Men. The crowd of 1,700 at Oland Stadium saw the Gaiters take the Bigg Bowl for the first time and remain in the QUFL playoff race. Andrews finished 8-for-13 for 148 yards passing, and was 9-for-139 on the ground. Matt Burke carried the ball 21 times for 64 yards. Olivier Mongeau was the Gaiters’ leading receiver with four catches for 63 yards. Mathieu Boulay had a career-high three sacks, and recorded five total tackles. Junior Turner led the Gaiters with six tackles, including a sack and a forced fumble.

THE SERIES: The Gaiters lead the all-time series against Montreal by a 13-5 margin. The first recorded meeting was a 35-1 Bishop’s win on October 16, 1926. After three years, the series went on a nearly 40-year hiatus, before resuming on Sept. 23, 1967 in Montréal, with Bishop’s winning 16-12. Since the re-launch of the Carabins in 2002, the Gaiters are 3-6 against Montréal (1-4 at Coulter Field). Montreal won the only meeting last year, 56-6 at CEPSUM.

LAST MEETING: The Gaiters’ playoff hopes came to a crashing halt as they fell 56-6 to the Montreal Carabins on Oct. 25, 2008. Montreal took a 22-6 lead into halftime, on a late Hantz Boursiquot touchdown, and put the game away with 34 unanswered second-half points. Marc-Olivier Brouillette scored three majors for the Carabins, who caused five Gaiter turnovers. Jamall Lee rushed for 96 yards in his final game as a Gaiter and also led the receivers with 32 yards. Defensively, Kyle Jones led the Gaiters with 8 tackles, while James Yurichuk had 7.5 tackles and a fumble recovery.

ANDREWS AIR FORCE: Jesse Andrews will be making his 29th consecutive start under centre for the Gaiters, the longest current streak in the QUFL. Andrews took over as the Gaiters’ quarterback in the second quarter of the Laval game on Sept. 24, 2006, and made his first start one week later. Andrews went over the 1,000-yard mark last week, marking his third consecutive thousand-yard season. He has a career total of 4,602 yards, putting him 398 away from the 5,000 yard mark. Andrews leads the QUFL with an average of 14.5 yards per completion, and is 20th in Canada in Pass Efficiency with a rating of 131.1. On the ground, he is currently eighth in the league in rushing, with 260 rushing yards.

WARNING! THIS GAME WILL CONTAIN GORE: Fourth-year receiver Shawn Gore is the QUFL’s fourth-leading receiver, with 21 catches for 370 yards through six games. Gore caught three passes for 69 yards last week, including a touchdown, and went past the 1,000-yard barrier.  Gore now has 1028 career yards in 26 games, and has caught a pass in his past 19 straight games.

GO DEEP!: The Gaiters currently hold down the #3 and #5 spots in the QUFL in yards per catch. Shawn Gore is third in the circuit with 17.6 yards per catch, while Olivier Mongeau is fifth with 16.4 yards per catch.

REMEMBER JERMAINE!: Rookie safety Jermaine Gabriel is second among QUFL rookies with 23 tackles this season, trailing only Nathan Taylor of Concordia. Gabriel has led the Gaiters in tackles in two games this season, including a ten-tackle (8 solo, 4 assist) performance at Laval.

NICK ‘NOCKS ‘EM DOWN:  Fourth-year cornerback Nick Poloniato is tied for the CIS lead with seven passes knocked down this year. (Matt Grohn of Calgary also has seven.) With a total of eight passes defended (knockdowns plus interceptions), Poloniato is tied for first in the QUFL, and tied for 5th in the CIS rankings.

LES MOUCHOIRS: The Gaiters rank third on the QUFL penalty list (21st in the CIS) with an average of 110.8 yards per game. Gaiters’ opponents are averaging 102.5 yards per game. Last week, the Gaiters committed eight penalties for a season-low 45 yards. On the other side, Montreal is the country’s most penalized team, as they have been flagged 87 times for an incredible 900 penalty yards through six games.

YOU CONN DO IT!: Gaiters linebacker Justin Conn was good on a 23-yard field goal attempt against St. F.X., his first attempt since Oct. 21, 2006 at Mount Allison. Conn has made 7-of-10 career field goal attempts, and is a perfect 5-for-5 from 20-29 yards.

TODAY IN GAITERS HISTORY:  On October 24, 1987, the Gaiters closed out a perfect regular season, their first since 1971, with a 39-10 dismantling of the Queen’s Golden Gaels at Bishop’s Field. Five different players, including both Wally and Steve Zatylny, scored touchdowns for the Gaiters, who outgained Queen’s 443-319. Simon Restall rounded out the scoring with five converts, a field goal and a single. Tony Harris completed 14 of 20 pass attempts for 286 yards, and three touchdowns, highlighted by a 90-yard pass to Wally Zatylny early in the fourth quarter. Al Matheson was the Gaiters’ defensive star, with eight tackles and an interception.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters close out the regular season with a matchup against the Concordia Stingers (2-4). Kickoff at Coulter Field is set for 1 p.m.
