Gaiters take Bigg Bowl with 33-12 win over StFX
October 17, 2009
ANTIGONISH, N.S. – A pair of
touchdown runs by fourth-year quarterback Jesse Andrews (Pickering,
Ont.) led the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 33-12 victory over the No. 6-ranked
St. Francis Xavier X-Men in CIS football action today. The crowd of
1,700 at Oland Stadium saw the Gaiters take the Bigg Bowl for the first
time and remain in the QUFL playoff race. Andrews threw for the Gaiters’
two other touchdowns, and finished with 128 rushing yards and 148
passing yards.
The Gaiters led 9-3 after the first quarter, but an
80-second stretch early in the second quarter was decisive. Andrews
scored his first major on a 20-yard scamper with 11:39 left to put the
Gaiters up 16-13. Four plays later, after a sack by Junior Turner
(Brampton, Ont.) caused a fumble, Andrews threw to Duraney White
(Montreal, Que.) for a 16-yard score, giving the Gaiters a 23-3 lead
with 10:19 left in the half.
Andrews’ second rushing touchdown came on a 72-yard run
down the sidelines on the last play of the third quarter, putting the
Gaiters up 30-12. Andrews iced the game in the fourth quarter, as he led
the Gaiters on a clock-chewing 11-play drive that consumed 5:07,
culminating in a Justin Conn (Fredericton, N.B.) 23-yard field goal –
his first since 2006.
A first-quarter touchdown by Shawn Gore (Don Mills, Ont.)
and a safety touch rounded out the scoring for Bishop’s. StFX scored on
a Mark Metulnysky touchdown in the third quarter, as well as an Anthony
Alix field goal and a safety touch.
The Gaiters outgained the sixth-ranked X-Men 379-322,
including a 231-48 edge in rushing yards. Bishop’s took a season-low
four penalties for 35 yards, while the X-Men were flagged seven times
for 80 yards. St FX held the ball for 36:05, but were hampered by four
turnovers. The Gaiters turned the ball over twice.
Andrews finished 8-for-13 for 148 yards passing, and was
9-for-128 on the ground. Matt Burke (Timberlea, N.S.) carried the ball
21 times for 64 yards. Olivier Mongeau (Sorel, Que.) was the Gaiters’
leading receiver with four catches for 63 yards. Mathieu Boulay (Magog,
Que.) had a career-high three sacks, and recorded five total tackles.
Boulay shared the team lead with linemen Elie Ngoyi (Sherbrooke, Que.)
and Junior Turner.
Steve Snyder completed 20 passes for StFX on 41 attempts,
for a total of 274 yards. His favourite target was Mark Metulynsky, who
caught six passes for 91 yards. James Green was the X-Men’s leading
rusher with 13 carries for 59 yards.
The Gaiters (2-4) will return home to face the Montreal
Carabins (4-2) next Saturday at Coulter Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
