Football: Gaiters fall to Laval for second time in three weeks September 27, 2009
QUEBEC
CITY – Benoit Groulx threw three touchdown passes to lead the No.
1-ranked Laval Rouge et Or to a 55-7 victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters
in Quebec University Football League action this afternoon at the PEPS
stadium. Laval led 20-0 after the first quarter, and cruised to the
victory as the Gaiters were unable to get their offence untracked.
Laval led from the opening kickoff, as
Christopher Milo scored a 79-yard single, putting Laval up 1-0. A pair
of touchdown passes, from Groulx to Mathieu Picard, and from Cesar
Hernandez-Sanchez to Marc-André Arcoite put the top-ranked Rouge et Or
up 15-0 at the ten-minute mark.
Groulx put the game out of reach in
the last two minutes of the first half, as he connected with Patrick
Lavoie on a 12-yard touchdown at 13:08, and with Maxime Béland on a
nine-yard pass at 14:55, giving Laval a 43-0 halftime lead.
The Gaiters broke the shutout at 6:44
of the fourth quarter when Jordan Heather (Oromocto, N.B.) hit a
streaking Shawn Gore (Don Mills, Ont.) for a 73-yard touchdown. The pass
came on Heather’s first career play as a Gaiter.
Touchdown runs by Hernandez-Sanchez
and Babacar Seye, along with three safety touches and two Milo field
goals (from 42 and 25 yards), rounded out the scoring.
Groulx left the game at halftime,
after having gone 16-for-21 for 192 yards and three touchdowns.
Sébastien Lévesque ran seven times for 155 yards before also leaving at
halftime. Other statistical leaders for Laval included Guillaume Sénécal,
who gained 94 yards on eight carries, and Béland, who made three
receptions for 95 yards. Hernandez-Sanchez was 8-for-11 for 132 yards
passing.

made 30 first downs, to the Gaiters’ eight. Laval rushed for 331 yards,
and passed for 340, while Bishop’s recorded 91 yards rushing and 111
yards passing. Each team committed one turnover.

(Oshawa, Ont.) was the Gaiters’ leading rusher, with five carries for 22
yards, while John Jean-Baptiste (Ottawa, Ont.) had six for 21. Heather
finished as the Gaiters’ leading passer, as he was 3-for-5 for 82 yards
and a touchdown. Starting quarterback Jesse Andrews struggled, going
2-for-7 for ten yards before being removed at halftime. Jake Ruddy
(Ottawa, Ont.) played the third quarter, completing one pass for 19
yards. Gore was the Gaiters’ leading receiver, with three catches for 82
yards.
Rookie safety Jermaine Gabriel
(Scarborough, Ont.) led Bishop’s defensively with ten tackles (8 solo, 4
