LENNOXVILLE – Bishop’s Gaiters defensive back Harrison Maloney (Thurso,
Que.) and kick returner Steven Turner (Brampton, Ont.) have been named
Quebec University Football League Players of the Week. Maloney took
defensive honours, while Turner won the Special Teams nod. The league
made the announcement at its office in Montreal today. These are the first Player of the
Week nods for Bishop's this year, and the first time two Gaiters have
won in the same week since Sept. 17, 2007 - when Turner and Jamall Lee
both captured league Player of the Week honours. Maloney, a six-foot-two, 196-pound
defensive back is a first-time winner. On Friday night, he recorded 5.5
tackles (five solo, one assisted), an interception and a knockdown in
the Gaiters' 25-20 win over McGill. Maloney's interception on McGill's
second play from scrimmage gave the Gaiters the ball on the McGill 18.
On McGill's last play of the game, Maloney cemented the Gaiters' win as
he knocked down Jonathan Collin's third-down pass. Turner, a five-foot-9, 185-pound
slotback and kick returner ran back a punt for a 61-yard touchdown
midway through the first quarter of Friday's game. He finished the night
with two punt returns for 81 yards, and two kickoff returns for 22
yards. The touchdown was Turner's second punt return touchdown in as
many weeks, and his fifth career return touchdown. This is his third
career Player of the Week award. The Gaiters (1-2) will visit the No. 1-ranked Laval Rouge et Or (3-0) on Sunday afternoon.
