Gaiters to host McGill and Concordia in
basketball doubleheaders February 18, 2010

WEEK: The Bishop’s Gaiters host a pair of crucial Quebec
University Basketball League doubleheaders this weekend. On Friday
night, the McGill Martlets and Redmen will come to visit, while Saturday
will see the Concordia Stingers come to town. On both nights, the women's game gets underway at 6 p.m., with
the men's game following at 8.

Both games this weekend will be

THE RECORDS:
The Gaiters are 10-11
overall, and tied for fourth in the QUBL at 4-8, two wins behind
third-place McGill, but the Gaiters two games in hand. The Gaiters have
lost their last four games. McGill is 11-12 overall (6-8 QUBL), and
winners of two of their last three games. Concordia is 9-17 overall (4-9
QUBL), and has lost two straight and five of their past six.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Gaiters dropped a pair of games to the league’s top two teams, 75-62
at UQAM last Friday and 79-61 to Laval on Saturday. On Friday, the
Citadins used a balanced attack, with four players scoring in double
figures, to pick up the win. Annick Stephanny Charles led the Gaiters
with 14 points, while Bethan Chalke finished with 11 and Robyn Wilson
scored nine points and made ten rebounds. On Saturday, Elyse Jobin
scored 22 points to lead Laval to the 79-61 win. Katy Germain led
Bishop’s with 18 points, while Marie-Ève Lemoine and Annick Stephanny
Charles scored ten each.
TIE ME UP,
TIE ME DOWN:
While Laval has clinched the top
spot in the league, the next four places are all up for grabs, with six
points separating second and fifth place. The Gaiters hold the
tie-breaker over Concordia, but would lose a two-way tie with UQAM.
Bishop’s needs to win by 14 points on Friday to hold the tiebreaker edge
over McGill.
SCOUTING THE
STINGERS: Concordia has
the league’s third-rated offence, at 67.5 points per game, but the
fifth-ranked defence (71.3 ppg). Concordia has three players averaging
in double figures, with Kristin Portwine sitting third in the QUBL with
13.6 points per game, while Jill Verhesen has 12.9 points per game and
Anne-Marie Prophete has 12.5. Verhesen (0.546) and Portwine (0.518) also
lead the league in field-goal percentage.
SCOUTING THE
MARTLETS: McGill has the
lowest-ranked offence in the league (37th in CIS) at 58.7 points per
game, but the top ranked defence (61.1 ppg). The Martlets are led by
second-year guard Anneth Him-Lazarenko, who averages 13.9 points and 7.9
rebounds per game, both second in the QUBL. Marie-Eve Martin (11.9 ppg)
is the only other Martlet averaging in double figures.
KAT’S
CLIMBING: Katy Germain is
now fourth in the QUBL (39th in the CIS) with 13.0 points per game. She
is also second in the league with 2.3 three-pointers made per game.
GIMME THAT!:
Second-year guard Annick
Stephanny Charles leads the QUBL with 2.5 steals per game. Her average
is tied for 13th overall in the CIS.

Men’s Basketball has a pair of home games this week, as they host McGill
on Friday and Concordia on Saturday.

Concordia. The Gaiters are three games back of both Laval and McGill,
who are tied for second place. Bishop’s has lost their last four games.
McGill is 12-15 overall (12-14 CIS, 8-6 QUBL), but have won six of their
past seven. Concordia is 10-17 overall (10-13 CIS, 4-9 QUBL) and have
gone 3-7 since Christmas.
LAST TIME
OUT: The Gaiters suffered
a pair of heavy defeats last weekend, as they fell 79-59 at UQAM on
Friday, and 74-58 at home to Laval on Saturday. At UQAM, Adil El
Makssoud scored 19 points as the Citadins broke away late in the first
quarter. Tim Hunter led the Gaiters with 15 points, while Damon
Thomas-Anderson scored 14. On Saturday, the third period was the
difference in a 74-58 Laval victory. Onnex Blackwood scored 15 for the
Gaiters in a losing cause, while Ryan Steele scored 13.
WEARING A TIE:
The Gaiters and Stingers are tied for the final QUBL
playoff spot, and Saturday’s game will determine the tiebreaker, if
necessary. Concordia would need to win by 18 points to control the
tiebreaker.
SCOUTING THE REDMEN:
McGill possesses the QUBL’s top-rated offence,
averaging 75.5 points per game, as they lead the league in field goal
percentage (0.439) and three-point percentage (0.393). McGill boasts the
league’s leading scorer in Matthew Thornhill, who averages 19.7 points
and 5.3 rebounds. Michael White (11.6) and Olivier Bouchard (10.6) also
average double-digits, while Bouchard leads the league with 3.7
assists/game.
SCOUTING THE STINGERS:
Concordia has both the lowest ranked offence (67.6 ppg) and defence
(75.6 ppg) in the league. They are led by veteran Decee Krah, who is
second in the league with 15.1 points per game, and Evens Laroche, who
averages 13.2 ppg.
TIM THE
TOOLMAN: Tim Hunter is
atop the QUBL leader board in three categories. He leads the league in
steals (2.4 per game), blocked shots (0.9) and assist-to-turnover ratio
(1.8). Hunter, who recently started seeing time at point guard, is now
third in the league with 3.3 assists per game.
SUPER-ROOKIE:
Rookie guard Onnex
Blackwood is third in the QUBL with 14.6 points per game. He has scored
in double figures in nine of 12 league games, with four games of 20
points or more. |
