Gaiters return to action
against UQAM & Laval
in basketball doubleheaders February 11, 2010

WEEK: The Bishop’s Gaiters play a pair of doubleheaders this
weekend, in Montreal against UQAM on Friday night, and at home against
the Laval Rouge et Or on Saturday night. On both nights, the women's game gets underway at 6 p.m, with
the men's game following at 8.

Both games this weekend will be

THE RECORDS - WOMEN:
The Gaiters are 10-9
overall, and tied for fourth in the QUBL at 4-6, but only one game back
of second-place UQAM. The Gaiters have lost three of their last four
games. The Citadins are 11-11 overall, and 6-6 in the league. They split
their games last weekend. Laval is 16-6 overall (16-5 CIS) and alone
atop the league with a 10-2 record.
THE RECORDS - MEN:
The Gaiters are 9-13
overall and 4-6 in QUBL play, putting them tied for fourth with
Concordia, but only two games back of second-place Laval . The Gaiters
are 5-3 since Christmas, but saw their three-game winning streak come to
an end last week. UQAM is 13-13 overall (12-9 CIS), and is in first
place with an 8-4 record, after wins in three of their past four games.
Laval is 13-16 overall (11-13 CIS) and 7-5 in league play. The Rouge et
Or were swept last week, and have lost four of their past six games. LAST TIME OUT - MEN:
The Gaiters saw leads slip away
twice as they fell 81-78 to McGill on Jan. 29 and 78-71 to Laval on Jan.
30. Onnex Blackwood led the Gaiters against McGill with 20 points, while
Damon Thomas-Anderson and Hermon Tesfaghebriel scored 13 each. In the
Laval game, the Gaiters led through the first three quarters, but Laval
came back in the fourth. Tim Hunter led the Gaiters with 16 points and
seven rebounds.
LAST TIME OUT - WOMEN:
The Gaiters dropped their last
two games, a 57-51 decision to McGill on Jan. 29 and 73-61 at Laval on
Jan. 30. In the McGill game, the Gaiters fell behind by as many as 13
points, and saw a fourth-quarter comeback fall short. Katy Germain led
the Gaiters with 15 points and three steals. The next night at Laval,
the Rouge et Or had five players in double digits as they cruised to the
12-point victory.
KAT’S
CLIMBING: After scoring 28 points two weeks
ago, Katy Germain is now fourth in the QUBL (39th in the CIS) with 13.0
points per game. She is also the league leader with 2.4 three-pointers
made per game.
LEADING OFF: Several Gaiters find themselves atop the QUBL leader
board. Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles leads the league with a 1.9
assist-to-turnover ratio, while Bethan Chalke has a league-high 0.568
field goal percentage and Annick Stephanny Charles leads the league with
2.3 steals per game.
BLOCK PARTY:
The Gaiters lead the QUBL with 2.7
blocks per game, led by nine from Tim Hunter and seven by Hermon
Tesfaghebriel.
SUPER-ROOKIE:
Rookie guard Onnex Blackwood is second in the
QUBL with 15.3 points per game. He is 39th overall on the CIS scoring
list, third among rookies. (Clinton Springer-Williams is the nation’s
leading rookie, with 20.4 points per game).
UP NEXT:
The Gaiters are home twice next week, with doubleheaders against McGill
on Friday, February 19, and Concordia on Saturday, February 20. |
