Gaiters to face McGill & Laval
in basketball doubleheaders January 28, 2010

WEEK: The Bishop’s Gaiters play a pair of doubleheaders this
weekend, at home on Friday to McGill and at the Laval Rouge et Or on
Saturday. On both nights, the women's game gets underway at 6 p.m, with
the men's game following at 8.

THE RECORDS - WOMEN:
The Gaiters
are 10-7 overall, and alone in third place in the QUBL with a 4-4 league
record. The Gaiters are 4-2 overall since Christmas, and have won two of
their last three games. McGill is 8-10 overall, 3-6 in QUBL play and
tied for fourth in the league. They have split their four league games
since Christmas. Laval is 13-5 overall (13-4 CIS) and alone atop the
league with a 7-1 record.
THE RECORDS - MEN:
The Gaiters
are 9-11 overall and 4-4 in QUBL play, putting them tied for third place
with McGill. The Gaiters have won five of six since Christmas, and have
won six of their past eight games. McGill is 8-14 overall (8-13 CIS),
and sits at 4-5 in league play. Laval is 11-14 overall (9-11 CIS), and
alone in second place with a 5-3 record. LAST TIME OUT - MEN:
A double-double by
Onnex Blackwood led the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 74-61 win over Concordia
last Friday night. Blackwood scored 24 points, ten in the first quarter,
and grabbed 11 rebounds. Damon Thomas-Anderson came off the bench to
score 12 points, while Jeremy Leonard-Smith scored 11 and Hermon
Tesfaghebriel added ten.
LAST TIME OUT - WOMEN:
The one-two punch of Katy Germain and Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles led the
Gaiters to a come-from-behind 63-52 victory over the Concordia Stingers.
Germain scored 20 points, while Ouellet-Godcharles netted 18 as Bishop’s
erased a 28-21 halftime deficit early in the third quarter.
SCOUTING THE MARTLETS:
The Martlets are led by
seventh-year Head Coach Ryan Thorne. They are last in the league in
scoring (39th of 44 in the CIS), with an average of 55.6 points per
game. They are ranked third in the league defensively, having given up
60.7 points on average. The Martlets lead the league (8th in CIS) in
three-pointers made per game, with 6.6. McGill is led by second-year
forward Anneth Him-Lazarenko, who averages 12.2 points and 8.5 rebounds
per game.
SCOUTING
THE REDMEN: Led by
seventh-year Head Coach Craig Norman, the Redmen are 8-14 overall, but
have won three of their past five games. They lead the CIS in
three-point shooting, with a percentage of 0.402, but are 23rd in the
country in scoring overall with 74.4 points per game. They are led by
Matthew Thornhill, who averages a league-leading 20.3 points per game
(10th in CIS), and is fourth in the league with 6.0 rebounds per game.
SCOUTING
THE ROUGE ET OR WOMEN:
The Laval Rouge et Or are coached by Linda Marquis who is in her 25th
season with the team. Laval has one of the stingiest defences in the
country, as they have given up a league-low 55.8 points per game. They
lead the CIS with 31.9 defensive rebounds per game, and 4.9 blocks per
game. The Rouge et Or are led by veteran centre Marie-Michèle Genois,
who leads the league with 14.0 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game
(7th in Canada). Marie-Pascale Nadeau is second in the league with 8.6
rebounds per game.
SCOUTING
THE ROUGE ET OR MEN:
The Laval Rouge et Or are coached by Jacques Paiement, Jr., who is in
his second year in the league. Laval is also a strong three-point
shooting team, with a percentage of 36.7% - second in the QUBL and 7th
in the CIS. They have allowed a league-low 68.2 points per game.
Offensively, they are keyed by Etienne Labrecque (14.8 ppg) and
Jean-François Beaulieu-Maheux (14.4 ppg). Labrecque is second in the
league with 7.0 rebounds per game.
KAT’S
CLIMBING: With 49
points in her past three games, Katy Germain is steadily climbing up the
league scoring list. She is currently third in the league (42nd in CIS)
with an average of 12.8 points per game.
LEADING
OFF: Several Gaiters
find themselves atop the QUBL leaders. Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles leads
the league with 2.8 three-pointers per game, 2.9 assists per game and a
2.3 assist-to-turnover ratio, while Bethan Chalke has a league-high
0.594 field goal percentage and Annick Stephanny Charles leads the
league with 2.6 steals per game.
BLOCK PARTY:
The Gaiters lead the QUBL with 2.9 blocks per game in the regular
season, led by seven from Tim Hunter, six by Hermon Tesfaghebriel and
five by Damon Thomas-Anderson.
SUPER-ROOKIE:
Rookie guard Onnex
Blackwood is second in the QUBL with 15.9 points per game. He is 34th
overall on the CIS scoring list, third among rookies. (Clinton
Springer-Williams is the nation’s leading rookie, with 20.4 points per
game).
UP NEXT:
The Gaiters are off next week, but return to action in two weeks. They
will visit the UQAM Citadins on Friday, February 12, before returning
home for a rematch against the Rouge et Or on Saturday, February 13. |
