HEADLINES Gaiters basketball closes out fall with pair of losses at UQAM November 28, 2009 LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters closed out the fall portion of their regular season schedule with a pair of defeats at the hands of the UQAM Citadins. The Citadins took the women's game by a 72-66 score, and completed the sweep with a 75-63 victory in the men's game.
WOMEN: UQAM 75, BISHOP'S 63 The Citadins led through the entire first half, and took a 33-24 lead with 1:43 left, their biggest lead of the first 20 minutes. The Gaiters bounced back and finished the half on an 8-0 run, to cut the gap to 33-32 at the break. The run continued in the third quarter, as the Gaiters' Katy Germain scored the half's first four points, to put the Gaiters ahead for the first time. The Gaiters started to roll in the third quarter, as they went on a 13-2 run to stretch their lead out to 49-37 with just over three minutes gone. However, the Citadins started to chip away at the lead, cutting the gap to one at 54-53 by the end of the quarter. UQAM took the lead for good with 4:47 left in the fourth, as Auger-Bellemare made the score 64-62. The Gaiters missed their last eight field goal attempts, while UQAM made four free throws down the stretch to ice the victory. Auger-Bellemare's 20 points led all scorers, with Irline Noël chipping in 14, Jessica Bibeau-Côté adding 12 and Stephanie Yoakim and Emie Simard scoring ten each. For Bishop's, Germain led with 17 points, while Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles scored 11. Jessy Roy led all players with 11 rebounds. The Gaiters finished the game shooting 28.6% from the field (18-63), while UQAM hit at a 42.9% clip (27-63). The Gaiters committed 28 turnovers, while UQAM made 29. UQAM outrebounded Bishop's 42-32. The Gaiters (6-5, 6-5 CIS, 2-3 QUBL) are off for the Christmas break. They are scheduled to tour Europe in the third week of December, with non-conference play resuming after Christmas.
MEN: UQAM 75, BISHOP'S 63 The Gaiters opened strongly, and led 13-11 after the first quarter. UQAM took the lead at 17-15 on a three-pointer by Thierry Justin, and used a 7-0 run to stretch the lead to nine points at 30-21. The Gaiters chipped away at the lead, as Hermon Tesfaghebriel scored three of the half's last five points to cut the lead to 30-26 at halftime. The third quarter proved to be the Gaiters' undoing, however. The Citadins went on a pair of runs, an 11-4 run early in the period, followed by 13-2 run to close out the frame, and led 58-40 after three quarters. Altogether, the Gaiters were outscored 28-14, as they went 5-for-16 from the field. UQAM stretched the lead to as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter, before the Gaiters responded with a 15-1 run to close the game and cut the final margin to 12. Oraine Green and Onnex Blackwood led the Gaiters with 13 points each, while Alex Audette-Genier scored a season-high ten. Arthaud Plesius led UQAM with 18 rebounds, while Adil El Makssoud scored 13 and Gregory St-Amand added ten. UQAM outrebounded Bishop's 38-30, with El Makssoud grabbing a game-high eight for the Citadins. Blackwood's five boards led Bishop's. The Gaiters finished with a 39.6% shooting percentage (19-48), while UQAM shot an even 40.0% (26-65). The Gaiters (4-10, 3-10 CIS, 1-4 QUBL) return to action after the Christmas break, as they will travel to Winnipeg for the Wesmen Classic. They will face the host Wesmen on December 28 at 7 p.m. Eastern (6 p.m. Central). |
