Gaiters basketball sweeps Concordia to pick up first home wins

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters picked up a sweep of their Quebec University Basketball League games tonight at the Mitchell Gym. In the women's game, the Gaiters downed the Stingers by a 73-61 score. In the nightcap, the Gaiters picked up their first win over Concordia in more than three years, a 77-71 victory.

WOMEN: BISHOP'S 73, CONCORDIA 61 - Game Stats
A career-high 18 points for Marie-Ève Lemoine led the Gaiters to a 73-61 victory over the Concordia Stingers in QUBL action tonight. The Gaiters led wire-to-wire in the game, as they ended their two-game losing skid.

The Gaiters broke the game open on a 12-4 run midway through the first quarter, capped by a pair of three pointers by Katy Germain and Annick Stephanny Charles, and led 19-11 after the period. A three-point play by Concordia’ Kristin Portwine early in the second cut the Gaiters’ lead to five, but Germain combined with Bethan Chalke to put the game away for good, as they combined a 10-0 run to put Bishop’s ahead 29-14. The Gaiters led 42-28 at halftime, and cruised to the victory through the second half. Concordia cut the lead to eight midway through the fourth quarter, but drew no closer, while Bishop’s led by as many as 18 points.

Lemoine went 7-for-10 from the field, as she led the Gaiters with 18 points. Germain came off the bench to score 12 points, all in the first half, while Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles scored ten points and made a career-high eight assists. Chalke and Charles scored nine points each.

For Concordia, Jill Verhesen led with a game-high 24 points, including going 10-for-11 from the free-throw line. She was the only Stinger in double digits, as Portwine finished the game with eight points.

The Gaiters shot 52.2 per cent from the field (24--46), just off their season high of 52.4%, while Concordia shot 40.4 per cent (19-47). The Gaiters outrebounded Concordia 29-23, and forced 20 Concordia turnovers.

The Gaiters (6-4, 6-4 CIS, 2-2 QUBL) return to action tomorrow night, as they visit the UQAM Citadins in Montreal. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. Concordia (5-10, 5-8 CIS, 2-3 QUBL) visits the same Citadins on Sunday, December 5.

MEN: GAITERS 77, CONCORDIA 71 - Game Stats
Rookie forwards Onnex Blackwood and Oraine Green led the way as the Gaiters picked up their first league win of the year, a 77-71 triumph over the Concordia Stingers. Blackwood scored 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while Green netted 20 points, including going 8-for-9 from the free-throw line. The Gaiters came from behind in the third quarter to pick up first win over Concordia since Jan. 6, 2006.

The Gaiters got off to a slow start, as Concordia pulled out to a 13-5 lead, and led 17-11 after the first quarter. Blackwood put the Gaiters ahead for the first time, at 32-31, with one minute left in the second quarter. However, Concordia ended the period with four unanswered points to lead 35-32 at the break.

The third quarter belonged to the Gaiters, as they outscored Concordia 22-13. A three-point play by Jeremy Leonard-Smith put the Gaiters up 39-37, a lead they would never relinquish. The Gaiters’ inside game put them on top in the period, as they scored 16 points in the paint, while holding the Stingers to two.

The Stingers fought back to tie the game at 61 with 5:36 to play, but four points by Blackwood restored the lead. Ryan Steele put the game away with a layup to put the Gaiters up 73-66 with 1:14 left.

Blackwood’s 21 and Green’s 20 points led the Gaiters, while Tesfaghebriel scored 13, and Tim Hunter added ten. Tesfaghebriel tied for the game lead with eight rebounds, while Hunter grabbed seven. Blackwood also led the Gaiters with five assists.

For Concordia, Evens Laroche led with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Decee Krah scored 12 points and added a team-high three assists.

The Gaiters shot 50.0% from the field (28-56), and held Concordia to 39.7% (25-63). The Gaiters caused 25 Concordia turnovers, while committing 17 of their own. Concordia outrebounded Bishop’s 39-32.

The Gaiters (4-9, 3-9 CIS, 1-3 QUBL) close out the fall tomorrow, as they visit the UQAM Citadins (4-8, 3-4 CIS, 1-0 QUBL) in Montreal. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. The Stingers (7-9, 7-5 CIS, 2-3 QUBL) are off until December 5, when they will visit the Citadins.
