Gaiters basketball suffers pair of narrow losses to Laval

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters came out on the short end of a pair of close games against the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec University Basketball League action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. Women's Basketball dropped a 72-64 (OT) decision to Laval, while Men's Basketball fell 73-68.

Bethan Chalke's free throw with 17 seconds left forced overtime, but the No. 7-ranked Bishop's Gaiters eventually fell 72-64 to the No. 5 Laval Rouge et Or. With the Gaiters trailing 61-60, Chalke make one of two free throws to tie the game at 61, the climax of a game that featured 14 ties and six lead changes.

In the extra period, layups by Marie-Pascale Nadeau, Chanelle St-Amour, and Marie-Michele Genois put Laval up 69-64 with 1:05 left, and the Gaiters were unable to draw closer. Marjorie Ferland settled matters with three game-clinching free throws.

The Gaiters played on the back foot for most of the game, as Laval started on a 9-0 run in the game's opening two minutes. A 10-5 run pulled Bishop's back to within 16-15 after ten minutes. Chalke gave Bishop's their first lead of the game at 17-15 on the first possession of the second quarter. She ended the quarter the same way, scored on the Gaiters’ last possession to put Bishop’s up 27-26.

Laval started the second half as they did the first, with a quick 9-0 run in the opening 2:10, but the Gaiters clawed back again to lead 43-42 after the third quarter. In the fourth, after Laval took a 51-45 lead, Jessy Roy combined with Chalke on a 7-0 run to put the Gaiters back in front 52-51. Annick Stephanny Charles gave the Gaiters their biggest lead of the night at 54-51 with 3:37 to go. Genois hit a free throw with exactly 2:00 left to tie the game at 57-57 to set up a finish where the lead changed hands four times. After Chalke tied the game at 61-61, each team had a chance to score but neither was able to convert.

Roy led the Gaiters with 14 points and seven rebounds. Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles added 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting, while Chalke finished with 12 points and Charles added 11.

Nadeau led all scorers with 18 points, as four Rouge et Or players hit double figures. St-Amour scored 15 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, while Elyse Jobin added 14 points, and Ferland chipped in ten.

The Gaiters shot 39.0% from the field, while Laval was 45.1%. The Rouge et Or went 21-for-25 from the free-throw line, including 5-for-6 in overtime, while Bishop’s was 13-for-22. Laval outrebounded Bishop’s 36-32, and committed 26 turnovers to the Gaiters’ 23.

The Gaiters (5-4, 1-2 QUBL) return to action on Friday night as they host the Concordia Stingers (2-2 QUBL). Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Mitchell Gym.

MEN: LAVAL 73, GAITERS 68 - Game Stats
A 12-2 run by Laval midway through the fourth quarter gave the Rouge et Or a 73-68 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters at the Mitchell Gym. Jean-François Beaulieu-Maheux started the run with a three-pointer and a layup, five of his game-high 22 points. The Laval run broke open a game that had been close through most of the three previous quarters, with ten ties and 11 lead changes.

The Gaiters got off to a strong start as Oraine Green, Ryan Steele and Hermon Tesfaghebriel all drained three-pointers in the game’s first 2:08 to give Bishop’s a 13-5 lead, forcing Laval into an early time out. Laval came all the way back in the first quarter, and led 22-21 after the first period, keyed by seven points from Beaulieu-Maheux. The Gaiters nosed ahead in the second quarter, and took a 38-36 lead into the intermission, led by Tesfaghbriel’s 11 first-half points.

Rookie Jeremy Leonard-Smith staked the Gaiters out to an 11-point lead at 47-36, their biggest of the night, midway through the third quarter, the culmination of a 9-0 run to start the period. The lead was short-lived, as Laval tied the game in the last minute of the quarter after a 14-4 run, and the game was tied 53-53 going into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, Ryan Steele put Bishop’s ahead for the final time at 57-56 with 7:32 to play. After Laval’s 12-2 run put them up 68-59, the Gaiters were able to get no closer than five points down, as the Rouge et Or escaped with the victory.

Tesfaghebriel finished the game with 17 points, while Onnex Blackwood scored 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Ryan Steele scored 14 points before fouling out late in the fourth quarter, while Oraine Greene netted 11. Tim Hunter led the Gaiters with seven rebounds.

For Laval, Beaulieu-Maheux led all scorers with 22 points, while Étienne Labrecque had a double-double with 15 points and ten rebounds. Xavier Baribeau was the only other Laval player in double figures, with 14 points.

The Gaiters shot 43.1% from the field, while Laval was 44.8%. Laval outrebounded Bishop’s 40-27, including 28-4 on the Gaiters’ offensive glass. Beaulieu-Maheux led the Laval bench to 34 points, while the Gaiters’ bench only scored two points.

The Gaiters (3-9, 2-9 CIS, 0-3 QUBL) return to action Friday night as they host the Concordia Stingers at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
