HEADLINES Gaiters basketball drops pair at McGill November 21, 2009 LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters were swept by McGill in Quebec University Basketball League action last night in Montreal. In the women's game, the Gaiters fell by a 60-43 score, while the men dropped a 102-88 decision in the nightcap. WOMEN: McGILL 60, #7 GAITERS 43 - Game Stats The Gaiters' four-game winning streak came to a screeching halt in a 60-43 loss to the Martlets. A poor shooting performance doomed the Gaiters, as they shot a season-low 26.3% from the field. After a back-and-forth opening quarter that ended with McGill up 14-13, the Martlets pulled away in the second, as they outscored the Gaiters 12-3. The Gaiters went 1-for-11 from the field during the period, and trailed 26-16 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Gaiters used a 9-2 run to close to within seven points, but a 15-0 McGill run over 4:10 put the game beyond doubt. Gabrielle Côté-Caouette (Quebec City, Que.) came off the bench to lead Bishop's with 12 points, and was the only Gaiter to hit double figures, as Katy Germain (Val d'Or, Que.) was held to eight points, while Jessy Roy (Val d'Or, Que.) scored seven. Marie-Ève Lemoine (Sorel, Que.) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. McGill had a balanced scoring attack, as Françoise Charest, Stephanie Bergeron, Marie-Eve Martin and Anneth Him-Lazarenko all scored 11 points, while Helène Bibeau added ten. McGill shot 34.5% from the field, compared to 26.2% for the Gaiters. The Martlets made 20 trips to the free throw line, scoring on 15 of them, while Bishop's was 4-for-7. The Gaiters outrebounded McGill 41-36, including a 28-8 edge on the McGill defensive glass. The Gaiters (5-3, 1-1 QUBL) return to action tonight as they host the No. 5 Laval Rouge et Or (3-0 QUBL). Game Stats The Gaiters led 19-15 after the first quarter, and by as many as six early in the second, but McGill rattled off 11 unanswered points over 2:13 in the second quarter to take the lead. The Gaiters rebounded to take a short-lived 37-35 lead late in the period, however McGill scored five points in the last 30 seconds to take a 40-37 halftime lead. Early in the fourth, Ryan Steele (Toronto, Ont.) scored three of his team-high 18 points to pull the Gaiters back to within four points at 77-73. However, McGill pulled away with a 13-4 run, keyed by seven points from Thornhilll over the next 3:25 to put the game away. For Bishop's, Steele and Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) tied for the team lead with 18 points each, while Oraine Green (Toronto, Ont.) scored 13 and Tim Hunter added ten. Tesfaghebriel and Hunter tied for the team lead with seven rebounds each. For McGill, Thornhill's 35 points led all scorers, while Pawel Herra scored 19 with Michael White and Nicolas Langley netting 18 each. Thornhill led all players with eight rebounds, while Jeff Cumming made ten assists. The Redmen outshot Bishop's 60.0% to 46.6%, including 11-for-16 from three-point territory. McGill went to the line an incredible 36 times, but only made 19 shots. The Gaiters were 11-for-18 from the line. The Gaiters (3-8, 2-8 CIS, 0-2 QUBL) return to action tonight as they host the Laval Rouge et Or (2-0 QUBL) at the Mitchell Gym. Laval downed Concordia 77-51 last night. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. |
