Soccer: Gaiters slide to 2-0 defeat to UQTR
September 11, 2008 LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's
Gaiters women's soccer team lost 2-0 to the UQTR Patriotes in a farcical
Quebec University Soccer League game at Coulter Field today. The game was delayed for 45 minutes as the none of
the originally-appointed referees failed to appear. While three
substitute officials were eventually found, the late start showed its
effect on the players, as the first half was a dreary, scoreless affair. The second half was more open, and UQTR hit the
scoreboard in the 69th minute as Marie-Michèle Lapointe knocked in a
rebound off a Jade Richter free kick. The Patriotes cemented the game in
the first minute of injury time as Richter fired a shot from 25 yards
past Gaiters' goalkeeper Becky Yates. Each team took 11 shots on goal, with Yates making
six saves for the Gaiters, including one off a Jessica Lavallée penalty
kick in the 80th minute. For UQTR, Maryse Drouin and Myriam Lalonde
combined to make six saves in the shutout. Gaiters' striker Stephanie
Burnett took five shots and was named the team's MVP, while Lavallée was
the player of the game for UQTR. The Gaiters fall to 1-9-0 on the season, and have
now officially been eliminated from the QUSL playoffs. They will
visit the Sherbrooke Vert & Or (0-1-0) on Friday at 6 p.m. SUMMARY: First half: MVPs: UQTR - Jessica Lavallée, Bishop's - Stephanie
