HEADLINES Gaiters fall 39-5 to McGill in women's rugby October 8, 2008
LENNOXVILLE - Three tries from outside centre Elissa Alaire led the McGill Martlets to a 39-5 victory over the Bishop's Gaiters in QSSF Women's Rugby action tonight at Coulter Field. Alarje opened the scoring in the 7th minute off a 20-yard run, and the conversion by Colleen Marcotte made the score 7-0. McGill expanded their lead to 12-0 five minutes later as Briana Yerbury scored on a 40-yard run. The Gaiters held the majority of the play through the remainder of the half, but were unable to put any points across. McGill extended their lead to 19-0 in the 31st minute on a penalty try awarded to Yerbury and Marcotte's second conversion. Two quick tries by Mandy Mongeon (47th minute) and Laura Stewart (49th) early in the second half put the game beyond reach. Alarje found the end zone in the 60th and 69th minute to close out McGill's scoring. For Bishop's, Sue Magwood scored in the 63rd minute, making a ten-yard run to the corner after a Gaiter scrum. The sequence was set up after the Gaiters intercepted a McGill pass at midfield, only to be tackled three yards out from the goal. Magwood's try was the first points for Bishop's against McGill since October 17, 2004, ending a three-game shutout streak. The Gaiters close the regular season with an 0-5-1 record, while McGill finishes 4-2 and will face Concordia in a QSSF semifinal. The Gaiters have an non-conference game set for Sunday, October 19th, when they will face the Carleton Ravens at 2 p.m. at Optimist Park. |
