FRIDAY : #8 CONCORDIA 91, GAITERS 77-

Junior
Nicolas (Montreal, Que.) scored his 1000th career QUBL point
tonight in a losing cause, as the Gaiters fell 91-77 to the No. 8-ranked
Stingers. Nicolas came into the game with 982 career points, and hit the
milestone on a 15-foot jump shot with 1:44 left in the game.
The
Gaiters were doomed by a slow start, as Damian Buckley and Jamall
Gallier combined to stake out the Stingers to a quick 10-0 lead, forcing
the Gaiters into a time out with just 1:46 gone. The Gaiters did not
trouble the scorers until the 4:24 mark, by which point Concordia had
built up a 14-0 lead. From that point on, the teams were even, with
Concordia leading 27-15 after the first quarter and 50-35 at halftime.

It was
the best of halves; it was the worst of halves. Needing a win to stay in
the playoff chase, the Gaiters stormed out to a 45-24 halftime lead,
only to have it all come crashing down in a five-point third quarter,
before finally falling 75-66 to the No. 8-ranked Stingers.
In the
early going, the Gaiters appeared equal to the must-win challenge. They
held even with
the nationally-ranked Stingers through the opening five minutes, and
went on a 14-4 run to end the first period with a 21-10 lead. Hermon
Tesfaghebriel’s uncontested dunk with 26 seconds left
sent the crowd of into hysterics, as the Gaiters
led 45-24 at the half.
The third quarter, though, saw a 180-degree reversal of
fortune, and by the time the quarter was done, Concordia had outscored
Bishop’s 30-5, and taken a 54-50 lead.
Nash led all scorers with 20 points, while Cam Mowat recorded
a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in his final game. Junior
Nicolas scored seven points in his final game, to finish with 1,008 for
his QUBL career. The Gaiters’ other senior, Damon Thomas-Anderson,
finished with six points and six rebounds. All three seniors were
honoured in a
pre-game ceremony.
UP NEXT: The Gaiters
have concluded their 2008-09 season
