Gaiters hoopsters split with Laval, indoor soccer & hockey fall

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:

This week’s Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are basketball players Jessy Roy and Junior Nicolas.

Nicolas (Montreal, Que.), led the Gaiters to their 88-77 win over the Laval Rouge et Or on Saturday night. Nicolas came close to a triple-double, as he scored 24 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and added seven assists. His 24 points was the highest for a Gaiter in a regular-season game this year, and his nine rebounds tied his career high. On Friday, Nicolas scored 11 points and matched his season high with four steals.

Roy (Val d'Or, Que.) led the Gaiters as she scored 14 points, made a career-high eight assists, and added six rebounds, as the Gaiters came from behind to upset Laval 72-67 on Saturday night. The last of her eight assists came on the game-winning basket with 1:32 left. On Friday night in Quebec City, she scored a team-high 13 points, and added four assists, as the Gaiters fell 63-57 to Laval.

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Gabrielle Côté-Caouette (Women's Basketball) - Went 5-for-7 from the field for a career-high 11 points on Saturday night.
  • Donald Lindo (Men's Basketball) - Scored eight points and had six assists in his first regular-season start on Saturday.
  • Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Women's Basketball) - Scored 11 points and made 4 assists on Saturday
  • Cam Mowat (Men's Basketball) - Scored 18 points in Saturday's win over Laval.
  • Amanda Piribauer (Women's Basketball) - Grabbed 13 rebounds on Saturday night.
  • Laure Pitfield (Women's Basketball) - Scored 19 points and had nine rebounds over last weekend's two games.
  • Tim McAleenan (Men's Basketball) - Led the Gaiters with 15 points on Friday night

Gaiters gain pivotal split with Laval to remain in playoff race

FRIDAY: LAVAL 77, GAITERS 70 - Box Score - Full story
A career-high 15 points by Tim McAleenan (Sussex, N.B.) went for nought tonight, as the Bishop's Gaiters fell 77-70 to the Laval Rouge et Or tonight in Quebec University Basketball League action in Quebec City. McAleenan's total beat his previous best of 13 points, which he scored on October 21, 2007 against the Manitoba Bisons.

McAleenan's 15 points led the Gaiters, while Junior Nicolas (Montreal, Que.) added 13. Jean-François Beaulieu-Maheux led Laval with 32 points, with Gagnon-Hebert scoring 15, and Jerome Turcotte scoring 13.

SATURDAY: GAITERS 88, LAVAL 77  - Box Score - Full story
Junior Nicolas scored 24 points, and added nine rebounds and seven assists led the Gaiters as they cruised to an 88-77 victory over the Laval Rouge et Or. The 24 points is the highest for any Gaiter game this year, and Nicolas' nine rebounds tied his career high.

Nicolas' 24 points, nine rebounds and seven assists were all game highs. The only other Gaiter in double figures was Cam Mowat, who scored 18. Donald Lindo scored eight points, and had a career-high six assists. For Laval, Turcotte-Routhier scored 23 points, while Christian Deslauniers-Trottier scored 15 points.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters face the UQAM Citadins (15-14 overall, 10-11 vs. CIS, 6-6 QUBL) this week, in a series that will go a long way to determining the Gaiters' playoff fate. Friday night's game is set for Lennoxville at 8 p.m., with the rematch in Montreal on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Gaiters swept the first series in November.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (10-10, 10-8 CIS, 7-5 QUBL - 2nd)
Gaiters notch second straight home win over Rouge et Or

FRIDAY: LAVAL 63, GAITERS 57 - Box Score - Full story
A late Gaiters comeback attempt fell just short, as Bishop's fell 63-57 to the Laval Rouge et Or. The Gaiters came back from 11 points down in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 57 with 1:35 left, but were unable to take the lead, as Laval scored the game's final six points.

Jessy Roy (Val d'Or, Que.) led the Gaiters with 13 points, while Germain and Laure Pitfield (Ottawa, Ont.) each scored ten. Laval had four players in double figures, led by St-Amour's 16 points and Jobin's 12.

SATURDAY: GAITERS 72, LAVAL 67 - Box Score - Full Story
The Gaiters scored the game's last seven points as they finally came out on top in a see-saw battle at Lennoxville's Mitchell Gym. Rookie Gabrielle Côté-Caouette tied the game at 67-67 with 1:59 to go, before Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles scored the game-winning points 27 seconds later. Free throws from Laure Pitfield and Amanda Piribauer iced the game in the dying seconds.

Côté-Caouette scored a career-high 11 points, while Jessy Roy. led the Gaiters with 14 points and a career-high eight assists. Ouellet-Godcharles was the only other Gaiter in double figures, as she scored 11 points - her highest total in 2009 and tied her season high with four assists. Piribauer had a game-high 13 assists to go with her seven points.

UP NEXT: The second-place Gaiters face the third-place UQAM Citadins (16-7 overall, 13-7 vs. CIS, 6-6 QUBL) this weekend. Friday night's game is at the Mitchell Gym, with a 6 p.m. tipoff. The series ends on Saturday in Montreal, with the teams tipping off at 5 p.m. The teams split the first series, with the home team winning each time.

WOMEN’S INDOOR SOCCER (0-2-1, T-6th QUISL)
Gaiters fall on late goal to 10-man Concordia.

The Gaiters dropped a 1-0 decision to Concordia on Saturday afternoon, as an 85th-minute goal from Monica Bass proved to be the difference. Gaiters' defender Teresa Julian was named the team's player of the game, for the first time this season. Fanny Berthiaume picked up the shutout for Concordia, while Kristen Cheng suffered her second loss in the Gaiters' net.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters will host the Sherbrooke Vert et Or this Friday at 8 p.m. at the Centre Sportif Roland-Dussault in Fleurimont.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY (7-7-1)
Polar Bears shut out by Sherbrooke, idle this week

The Polar Bears were shut out in their only game last weekend, a 7-0 home loss to the Sherbrooke AAs. The Bears were unable to get any offence going in the game, as they slumped to their third loss in four games.

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears are off this week. Their next game in Friday, February 13, when they host The Pingree School, a Boston-area prep school
