splits against McGill, indoor soccer gets first points

ATHLETES OF THE
WEEK:
This week’s
Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are basketball players Cam
Mowat and Amanda Piribauer.
Mowat (Kelowna, B.C.), a
fifth-year guard, had quite simply the best weekend of his
career. On Friday, he came off the bench to score a career-high
20 points in the Gaiters' home loss to McGill. On Saturday, he
followed that up with a 16-point, seven rebound performance in
the Gaiters' four-point win over the Redmen. Mowat hit a pair of
clutch three-pointers in the third quarter to help the Gaiters
erase an eight-point McGill lead, and iced the game with a pair
of clutch free-throws.
Piribauer (Kingston, Ont.) had
a double-double to lead the Gaiters to their win over McGill on
Saturday. She finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds, including
14 second-half points, as the Gaiters cruised to the win over
the Martlets. A pair of early third-quarter layups broke the
Gaiters out of their offensive doldrums, and broke the game
open.

The
Gaiters fell 88-67 to the McGill Redmen on Friday night. The
Redmen took the lead at 3-2 with just 1:30 gone the game, and never
looked back, outscoring the Gaiters 25-11 in the opening quarter,
and taking a 42-28 halftime lead. The Gaiters narrowed the gap to eight late in
the third quarter, but could not draw any closer.
The
Gaiters were led by a career-high 20 points by Cam Mowat, as well as 15
points from rookie forward D’Arcy Nash, his third straight double-figure
performance, while Hermon Tesfaghebriel added 13.
Thomas-Anderson finished with ten points as he shot 5-for-7 from the
field. Junior Nicolas was held to only two points, but made a
career-high eight assists.

A 16-point, seven rebound performance from Cam Mowat
led the Bishop's Gaiters to a 77-73 win over the McGill Redmen. Mowat
scored 14 second-half points, as the Gaiters overcame a 34-33 halftime
deficit to gain a split of their weekend series.
For
Bishop's, Damon Thomas-Anderson scored a team-high 19 points, including
7-for-10 from the free throw line, while Junior Nicolas added 18 and Mowat scored 16. McGill's Moustafa El-Zanaty led all
scorers with 26 points, while Sean Anthony scored 15 and Pawel Herra
added 12.

low-scoring games against Martlets

The
McGill Martlets came from behind in the third and fourth quarter to
upset the Gaiters 56-47. The Gaiters led 28-23 at the half, and by ten
points late in the third quarter. However, the Redmen went on a 16-2 run
to take the lead with 5:10 left in the game, and held on for the
victory.
Felicia
Craig-Thompson led the Gaiters with a career-high 12
points, as she went 6-for-8 from the field. Robyn Wilson made her first start of the year and scored eight points and
grabbed four rebounds. Jessy Roy grabbed a career-high
ten rebounds and scored four points.

Amanda Piribauer's fourth double-double of the season
led the Bishop's Gaiters to a 50-38 win over the McGill Martlets at Love
Competition Hall in Montreal. Piribauer scored 17 points and grabbed 13
rebounds as the Gaiters prevailed in a tight defensive struggle.
Piribauer's 17 points
led all scorers, while Germain finished with 14 points. Piribauer's 13
rebounds were also a game-high, with Jessy Roy, Mélanie
Ouellet-Godcharles and Robyn Wilson grabbed six each. Roy also had five assists. For
McGill, Nathifa Weekes scored 12 points, while Stephanie Bergeron added
nine and Anneth Him-Lazarenko scored eight.
The win keeps the
Gaiters (9-9 overall, 6-4 QUBL) in a tie for second place with the UQAM
Citadins, who swept Concordia this weekend.
UP NEXT: The
second-place Gaiters have a home-and-home against the
first-place Laval Rouge et Or (13-6, 12-5 CIS, 7-1 QUBL). The teams
split their opening two games of the year. Friday night's game
is set for Ste-Foy, while with the teams closing out the series
on Saturday at the Mitchell Gym. Both games are scheduled to
tip off at 6 p.m. |

WOMEN’S
INDOOR SOCCER (0-1-1, T-5th QUISL)
Gaiters earn tie at home
against UQTR, Concordia on tap this week
The
Gaiters earned their first points ever in Women's Indoor Soccer
last week, as they came from behind twice to earn a 2-2 tie
against the UQTR Patriotes. After Jade Richter put UQTR on top
in the 12th minute, the Gaiters responded eight minutes later,
as Stephanie Burnett (Durham, Conn.) took a pass from Susanne
Raupach (Meckhenheim, Germany) and fired it past UQTR's Alexina
Sirois. UQTR regained the lead in the 44th minute on a
Marie-Michele Lapointe penalty kick. Linda Guerrera's (Montreal,
Que.) 75th-minute goal gave the Gaiters a share of the spoils.
Stephanie Burnett finished with one goal and one assist, an she
was named the Gaiters' MVP for the second consecutive week.
Kristen Cheng made three saves for the Gaiters to earn the tie,
while Alexina Sirois made five for UQTR.

NEXT: The Gaiters will visit the Concordia Stingers this
Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The game will be played at the new Centre
Sportif Bell in Brossard. |

WOMEN’S
HOCKEY (7-6-1)
Polar Bears fifth at Stanstead, host Sherbrooke AA this
week
The Polar
Bears went 1-2 at last weekend's Stanstead Invitational,
finishing in fifth place in the six-team tournament. In Friday's
round robin games, the Bears fell 8-1 to the Sherbrooke Queens,
with Erika Cook scoring the lone Bishop's goal, and 5-1 to Lac
St. Louis, with only Andrea Gray finding the net for the Bears.
In Saturday's
fifth-place game, the Bears rebounded to defeat Lower Canada
College 8-2, led by Emilee Walker's hat trick, and singles from
Katie Greentree, Chantal Richard, Kayla Dawson, Anna Bertrand
and Erika Cook. Maryse Richard played all three games in goal.
UP NEXT: The Polar Bears are at home on
Friday night, as they take on Sherbrooke AA at the W. B. Scott
Arena. Faceoff is set for 7:45 p.m. |
