ATHLETES OF THE
WEEK:
This week’s
Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Damon Thomas-Anderson of the
Men's Basketball team and Jessy Roy of the Women's
Basketball team.
Roy (Val d'Or, Que.) led the
Gaiters to their upset of the Laval Rouge et Or on Saturday
night, scoring 11 points and grabbing six rebounds in the
Gaiters' 53-44 victory. Roy also made a game-high four assists
and added two steals and the Gaiters moved into second place in
the QUBL.
Thomas-Anderson (Verdun, Que.)
led the Gaiters in their 91-80 loss at home to Laval on
Saturday, with an 11-point, six-rebound performance in 28
minutes. He shot 5-for-7 from the field, and picked up a
team-high three offensive rebounds.
HONOUR ROLL:

Pitfield (Women's Basketball) - Scored eight points on
4-for-5 shooting on Saturday.

Nicolas (Men's Basketball) - Scored 14 points and grabbed
eight rebounds on Saturday.

14-point efforts from Junior Nicolas and Hermon Tesfaghebriel went for nought, as the
Bishop’s Gaiters fell 91-80 to the Laval Rouge et Or. The game featured
seven ties and 12 lead changes before the Rouge et Or finally broke the
game open late in the fourth quarter.
The
Gaiters held a 23-22 edge after ten minutes, on the strength of an 8-0
run in the late stages of the period. Bishop’s stretched the lead to six
points in the second quarter, as Tim McAleenan’s layup
put the Gaiters up 33-27. However, Laval responded with an 8-0 run to
take the lead at 34-33, and scored the last five points of the quarter
to take a 42-40 halftime lead.
Nicolas and Tesfaghebriel led the Gaiters with 14 points each, with Nash
adding 12 and Damon Thomas-Anderson scoring 11. Nicolas also had a
team-high six rebounds, while Thomas-Anderson grabbed six. For Laval,
Jean-François Beaulieu-Maheux led all scorers with 20 points, while
Étienne Labrecque scored 18, François-Olivier Gagnon-Hebert scored 14,
and Xavier Baribeau scored 11.

complete the split home-and-home series Saturday night at the

A balanced attack and
strong defence propelled the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 53-44 upset of the
previously-unbeaten Laval Rouge et Or. Despite the low score, ten
different Gaiters hit the scoreboard, led by 11 points from Jessy Roy.
The
Gaiters came out strongly, holding the high-powered Laval offence to
only three field goals in the first quarter. Laval shot 3-for-8 and
committed 10 turnovers in the quarter, as the Gaiters took a 12-6 lead.
In
the second quarter, after Laval pulled back to within two at 17-15, the
Gaiters went on a 9-0 run to stretch their lead out to 11 points – their
largest lead of the night – and took a 26-19 lead into halftime.
Roy
led the Gaiters with 11 points and six rebounds, while Laure Pitfield added eight points and Germain, Piribauer and Côté-Caouette each netted seven. Piribauer also had a game-high seven
rebounds.
UP NEXT: The Gaiters
have a home-and-home against the McGill Martlets (4-14, 3-14
CIS, 2-6 QUBL). The teams meet in Lennoxville on Friday night,
and head to Montreal on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to
tip off at 6 p.m. |

Gaiters lose at Laval,
home opener against UQTR this week
The
Gaiters endured a rough start to their 2009 season, as they
suffered a 9-0 road loss to the Laval Rouge et Or on Sunday.
Virginie Jacques' hat trick and a brace from Marie-Michèle
Vallée led the home side as they took a 4-0 halftime lead, and
cruised through the second half for the win. Rookie forward
Stephanie Burnett was named the Gaiters' Player of the Game.

NEXT: The Gaiters will host UQTR (0-1) at the Centre Multisport
Roland-Dussault in Fleurimont on Friday night. Kickoff is set
for 8 p.m. |

WOMEN’S
HOCKEY (6-4-1)
Polar Bears off last week, play at Stanstead
Invitational this week
The Polar
Bears were off this week, but return to action this weekend as
they play in the Stanstead College Invitational. The Bears will
have round-robin games on Friday against the Lac St. Louis
Selects and the Sherbrooke Queens on Friday, with the tournament
concluding on Saturday. |
