Gaiters hoopsters swept by Laval, pucksters drop two down east

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:

This week’s Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Tim Hunter of the Men's Basketball team and Amanda Piribauer of the Women's Basketball team.

Hunter (Baie d'Urfé, Que.) led the Gaiters on Friday night with 18 points, including three three-pointers, and also grabbed a team-high six rebounds in the Gaiters' 88-73 loss at Laval.

Piribauer (Kingston, Ont.) scored 16 points in 28 minutes, including going 5-for-5 from the free-throw line, in the Gaiters 76-56 defeat at Laval.

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Katy Germain (Women's Basketball) - Scored 12 points and made a game-high four steals on Friday.
  • Tim McAleenan (Men's Basketball) - Recorded a career-high four steals on Friday.
  • D'Arcy Nash (Men's Basketball) - Rookie scored 18 points in 32 minutes on Friday.
  • Maryse Richard (Women's Hockey) - Made 45 saves on Saturday against Mount Allison.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (7-14, 6-12 CIS, 3-4 QUBL - 4th)
Gaiters finish 6th at Halifax tournament.

Men's Basketball dropped their only game of the weekend, 88-73 to the Laval Rouge et Or.

FRIDAY: LAVAL 88, GAITERS 73 - Box Score - Full release
The Gaiters fell behind early, and could not find a way back as they fell 88-73 to the Rouge et Or tonight. Laval led 24-16 after the first quarter and steadily expanded their advantage, holding a 42-28 halftime edge and cruising through the second half.

Rookie forwards D'Arcy Nash and Tim Hunter led the Gaiters with 18 points each, while Junior Nicolas added 13. Hunter also grabbed a team-high six rebounds, while second-year guard Tim McAleenan made a career-high four steals. Laval had six players in double figures, led by Beaulieu-Maheux' 24 points, while François-Olivier Gagnon-Hebert scored 15, and Deslaunier netted 14. Jerome Turcotte recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters and Laval will complete the split home-and-home series Saturday night at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (7-8, 7-6 CIS, 4-3 QUBL T-2nd)
Gaiters fall at Laval on Friday, rematch set for Saturday night

FRIDAY: LAVAL 76, GAITERS 56 - Box Score - Full release
A third-quarter letdown cost the Gaiters, as they fell 76-56 to the undefeated Rouge et Or. The Gaiters led 34-32 at halftime, before Laval went on an 8-0 run midway through the third quarter to take the lead for good, and put the game away with a 13-1 run at the end of the period.

Amanda Piribauer led the Gaiters with 16 points, while Germain added 12. Laval had three players in double figures, led by Bibeau's 24, with Marie-Michelle Genois scoring 19 and Chanelle St-Amour hitting for 10 points. Genois' 10 rebounds gave her a double-double for the night.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters and Rouge et Or square off again this Saturday at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

WOMEN’S INDOOR SOCCER (0-0)
Gaiters open 2009 at Laval on Sunday

The 2009 Indoor Soccer season kicks off on Sunday morning, as the Gaiters travel to Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, just outside Quebec City, to face the Laval Rouge et Or. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m., and the game will be followed by a friendly between Laval's men's team and the Montreal Impact.

The Gaiters will play a seven-game schedule, with their first home game coming on Friday, January 23.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY (6-4-1)
Gaiters drop pair against Maritime schools

After a six-week break, the Bishop's Polar Bears returned to action with a two-game trip to New Brunswick. On Saturday, the Gaiters played the Mount Allison Mounties, who play in the AUS varsity league, dropping a 5-1 decision. The Bears led 1-0 after the first period, but allowed the Mounties to tie the game in the second, and gave up four goals in the third period. Katie Andrews was the only goalscorer for the Bears, while Maryse Richard made 45 saves in the losing effort.

On Saturday, the Bears played the UNB Reds at Fredericton's Aitken Centre. The Bears fell 4-2 with Anna Bertrand and Erica Cook scoring for Bishop's, while UNB got goals from Shana Noseworthy, Jenny Bourgeois, Katelyn Fitzherbert and Allie Hopkins. Maryse Richard took the loss in goal, despite a strong game.

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears' next action is in two weeks, Jan. 23-24, when the play in a tournament at Stanstead.
