This week’s Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Tim McAleenan of the Men's Basketball team and Amanda Piribauer of the Women's Basketball team.

Piribauer (Kingston, Ont.) led the Gaiters to their sweep over the Concordia Stingers last weekend. On Friday night, she scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, both game highs, in Bishop's 84-59 win at Concordia. On Saturday, she scored ten points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds in the Gaiters' 85-55 win over the Stingers in Lennoxville.

McAleenan (Sussex, N.B.) had the best weekend of his career last week against Concordia. On Friday, he made a career-high six assists in the Gaiters' 102-61 defeat at the hands of the No. 7-ranked Stingers. On Saturday, he scored a team-high ten points in 21 minutes as the Gaiters fell 59-51 to Concordia.

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles - G - Women's Basketball - Scored a game-high 15 points on Saturday against Concordia.
  • Hermon Tesfaghebriel - F - Men's Basketball - Scored 10 points and had eight rebounds on Saturday vs. Concordia
  • Jessy Roy - G - Women's Basketball - Made a season-high four steals on Saturday against Concordia.
  • Cam Mowat - C - Men's Basketball - Scored a team-high 17 points on Friday at Concordia
  • Katy Germain - G/F - Women's Basketball - Scored 25 points over last weekend's series.
  • Junior Nicolas - G - Men's Basketball - Scored 21 points in two games last weekend.
  • Laine Laplante - Women's Hockey - Led Polar Bears with four goals last weekend.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (6-11, 5-9 CIS, 3-3 QUBL - T-2nd)
Gaiters fall twice to No. 7 Concordia.

Men's Basketball was swept in their series last week by the Concordia Stingers. On Friday, the Gaiters suffered a 102-61 defeat at the hands of the nationally-ranked Stingers in Montreal. On Saturday, the Gaiters came closer, but could not pull off a third straight miracle home win, as they fell 59-51 to Concordia.

FRIDAY: #8 STINGERS 102, GAITERS 61 - Box Score
Men's Basketball saw their three-game winning streak come to a screeching halt, as they suffered a 102-61 defeat at the hands of then-No. 8 Concordia. The Gaiters fell behind early, trailing 32-12 after the first quarter, and never recovered.

Cam Mowat led the Gaiters with 17 points, on 7-of-10 shooting, while Junior Nicolas added 12. Andrew Wright scored nine points, while rookie forward D'Arcy Nash (Toronto, Ont.) scored eight points - including a resounding dunk in the fourth quarter. McAleenan finished with four points and a career-high six assists. (Full release)

SATURDAY: #8 STINGERS 59, GAITERS 51 - Box Score
Men's Basketball played a nailbiter for the third time in as many regular-season home games, but could not pull off another miracle comeback as they fell 59-51 to the then-No. 8 Stingers. The Gaiters trailed 52-42 with 1:55 to go, but could only get as close as four points (55-51) with 30 seconds to go.

Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C) and Tim McAleenan were the only two Gaiters in double figures, with 10 points each, while Nicolas added nine and Hunter scored eight. Tesfaghebriel also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Damian Buckley led Concordia with 25 points, with Evens Laroche scoring ten.  (Full release)

UP NEXT: The Gaiters are off for exams, and return to action on January 2, 2009 at the Rod Shoveller Invitational in Halifax, N.S. The Gaiters will play their first game against the host Dalhousie Tigers at 8 p.m. (Atlantic time)

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (6-6, 6-4 CIS, 4-2 QUBL T-1st)
Gaiters sweep Concordia, remain tied for first place

Women's Basketball picked up their first sweep of the season, with a pair of lopsided wins over the Concordia Stingers. On Friday, the Gaiters cruised to an 84-59 win in Montreal, and followed that up with an 85-55 victory in Lennoxville on Saturday afternoon.

FRIDAY: GAITERS 84, CONCORDIA 59  - Box Score
A double-double by Amanda Piribauer led the Gaiters to an 84-59 win over Concordia (3-10, 1-4). The Gaiters never trailed in the contest, taking a 27-17 lead after the first quarter, and a 47-31 lead at halftime.

Piribauer led all scorers with 20 points - matching her career high - and ten rebounds, her second double-double of the season. Katy Germain scored 11 points, while Jessy Roy added ten points and five rebounds. All twelve players played for the Gaiters, with ten different players hitting the scoreboard. The Gaiters shot 49.2% from the field, and held Concordia to 32.2% shooting. Bishop's dominated the boards, outrebounding Concordia 39-25. (Full release...)

SATURDAY: GAITERS 85, CONCORDIA 55  - Box Score
All five starters scored at least nine points as the Gaiters used a balanced attack to down the Stingers 85-55 in Saturday's return match. The Gaiters led 23-11 after the first quarter, and 42-23 at halftime. 85 points is the highest score for the Gaiters since an 89-83 win over Memorial University of Newfoundland on Oct. 23, 2004.

The Gaiters had their best shooting day of the year, hitting 32 of 52 shots, for a 61.5% field goal percentage. Bishop's was deadly from the three-point line as well, hitting eight of 15 attempts, led by four treys by Katy Germain. Ouellet-Godcharles led all scorers with 15 points, while Germain added 14. The twin towers of Amanda Piribauer and Laure Pitfield scored 10 points each, with Piribauer collecting a game-high seven rebounds. Roy scored nine points, and added five assists and four steals. UP NEXT: The Gaiters embark on a tour of Cuba in mid-December, and return to league action on January 9, as they will visit the Laval Rouge et Or, who are tied with the Gaiters for first place. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY (6-2-1)
Polar Bears take third place at own tournament

The Bishop's Polar Bears picked up a third place finish at their own tournament, held last weekend at the W.B. Scott Arena. A 5-2 win over Mini-Sherby (Cookshire-Eaton), a 6-0 win over the Blue Machine (Sherbrooke) and a 3-2 loss to All Obama (Ste-Adrien) put the Polar Bears into the tournament's Bronze Medal game. In the Bronze game, the Gaiters downed All Obama 5-1, with goals coming from Laine Laplante, Katie Andrews, Andrea Gray, Ashley Bertrand and Sara Owens.

Over the four games, the Polar Bears were led by Lane Laplante's four goals, while Anna Bertrand, Andrea Gray and Katie Andrews scored three each.

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears have concluded the fall portion of their schedule, and will return to the ice in January.
