MEN’S
BASKETBALL
(4-9, 3-7 CIS, 1-1 QUBL)
Gaiters drop opener
away, upset No. 9 McGill at home.
Men's
Basketball split their two games last weekend against McGill,
opening the QUBL season with a 1-1 mark. On Friday, the Gaiters
fell 103-91 to the Redmen, but rebounded for a thrilling 72-70
upset win over the then-No. 9 Redmen on Saturday night in
Lennoxville. The win is the first in league play for new
Gaiters' Head Coach Rod Gilpin.
FRIDAY: GAITERS 91 at
#9 REDMEN 103
Men’s Basketball opened their
QUBL season on a losing note, suffering a 103-91 defeat at the hands of
the No. 9 McGill Redmen. The Gaiters led by as many as 14 points in the
first quarter, before McGill came back and cruised to the 12 point win.
The game started out as
a torrid pace, as the upset-minded Gaiters stormed out to a 17-6 lead
just four minutes into the contest. Six of Hermon Tesfaghebriel’s 16
first-half points staked the Gaiters out to a 26-12 lead – their largest
of the night, before the Redmen cut the margin to 33-27 by the end of the
frame.
The second quarter was
a 180-degree shift, as the Gaiters’ shooters suddenly turned cold.
Bishop’s scored only two field goals in the first five minutes, as
McGill started the quarter on a 12-2 run to take the lead and led 55-45
at halftime. The Gaiters pulled to within four points early in the
fourth, but the Redmen quickly stretched the lead back to nine and
cruised to the win.
The Gaiters had five
players in double figures, led by Tesfaghebriel’s 19. and Junior
Nicolas’ 17 and 15 points from Thomas-Anderson. (Full

SATURDAY :
GAITERS 72, No. 9 McGILL 70 -
Box Score
A layup by Damon Thomas-Anderson with 16 seconds left capped a Gaiters' comeback from
eight points down in the final three minutes, and propelled Bishop's to
a 72-70 upset win over the No. 9-ranked Martlets. The game featured 11
lead changes and five ties, with the last lead change coming with 19
seconds left in the game.
Anderson led the
comeback as he scored five points in the Gaiters' game-winning 10-0 run,
while Hermon Tesfaghebriel accounted for four,
including the basket the pulled the Gaiters to within 70-69 with 53
seconds left. A turnover by McGill's Sean Anthony led to Anderson driving for the winning basket
with 19 ticks left. McGill's attempt to re-take the lead was thwarted
when Andrew Wright stole the ball from Anthony and
drained one free throw to clinch the game. (Full

Gaiters rebound for
split against McGill
Women's
Basketball split their opening weekend of QUBL play, losing
64-60 to McGill on Friday night, before rebounding to trounce
the Martlets 84-50 on Saturday night in Lennoxville. The win is
the first QUBL win for Alex Perno - the Gaiters' new Women's
Basketball Coach.
FRIDAY: GAITERS 60 @
McGILL 64
A 27-point effort by Katy Germain
went for nought, as the Gaiters dropped a 64-60
decision to the Martlets. The Gaiters led 48-46 after
three quarters, but let the lead slip away three minutes into the
quarter, and were held off the scoreboard in the last 2:45 of the game. The Martlets tied the
game at 52-52 three minutes into the fourth, and never trailed from that
point. The last of Germain’s seven three-pointers tied the game at 60
with 2:45 remaining, but McGill’s Aurelie Lauzier responded immediately
to put the Martlets back up by two.
Laure Pitfield (Ottawa,
Ont.) was the only other Gaiter in double-figures, with 10 points, while
Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) scored eight.. Amanda
Piribauer (Kingston, Ont.) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and scored

and took a 26-13 lead after ten minutes. The Gaiters led by as many as
29 points in the first half and led 53-26 at halftime. The Gaiters
