WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (3-3)
Gaiters idle last week, head south for final tuneup

Women's Basketball was idle last week, but returns to action this week with two games against NCAA opposition. On Friday, the Gaiters will take on the UMass Minutewomen in Amherst, Mass. On Saturday, the Gaiters will take on the Bryant Bulldogs in Smithville, Rhode Island. Bryant is in their first year of NCAA Division I play, having moved up from Division II.

MEN’S RUGBY (6-2-0 overall, 4-2-0 QURU, 2nd)
Gaiters advance to QURU final for second straight season

Men’s Rugby (4-2) team clinched their second straight berth in the Quebec University Rugby Union championship game with an 11-9 win over the Sherbrooke Vert & Or (3-4). A raucous crowd of over 300 people at Coulter Field saw the Gaiters take an early lead and hold off a late Sherbrooke charge to preserve the victory.

The Gaiters got on the board in the tenth minute, as No. 8 Sean McClelland put the ball down in the corner of the end zone. The remainder of the first half was largely stalemated, as neither team was able to generate much offence. The teams combined for five penalty goals in the final 40 minutes, with William Murphy connecting for Bishop’s in the 42nd and 52nd minutes, with Sherbrooke’s Jean-Michel Diorio replying in the 50th, 57th and 68th minutes.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters will face the McGill Redmen (6-1) in the provincial championship game on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff at Molson Stadium is set for 1 p.m.

LACROSSE (8-7-0, 6-4-0 CUFLA)
Gaiters fall to McGill in CUFLA Quarter-finals

Lacrosse dropped their CUFLA Quarter-final game 13-7 to the McGill Redmen in Montreal on Saturday night. The Gaiters fell behind early, trailing 5-2 after 20 minutes and 9-3 at the halftime interval. In the third quarter, the Gaiters appeared to have started a comeback as Jimmy Southall scored to cut the gap to 10-5, but his stick was found to be illegal, nullifying the goal and (thanks to the three-minute penalty inflicted on Southall) any momentum. Josh Crone led the Gaiters with three points (2G, 1A), while Andy Barber had two goals and Southall finished with one goal and an assist. The other Gaiters goalscorers were Mike Dubé and Jesse Gattellaro. Goalkeeper Brennan Durovick allowed 13 goals in the loss.

The Gaiters end the season with an overall record of 8-7, and fail to qualify for the Baggataway Cup final for the first time in their history.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters have concluded their 2008-2009 season
