This week’s Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are James Le Huquet of the Men's Rugby team and Katy Germain of the Women's Basketball team.

Le Huquet (Brockville, Ont.) scored two tries in leading Men's Rugby to a 24-20 victory over the Concordia Stingers on Sunday afternoon. He also stood in as captain during the game, after an injury to Pat Whelan.

Germain (Val d'Or, Que.) led the Gaiters to the championship of the Loeb Glebe Invitational tournament in Ottawa last weekend. Her layup with no time left on Saturday against UPEI forced overtime, capping a Gaiters' comeback from 18 points down.

HONOUR ROLL:

FOOTBALL (3-5, 5th QUFL)
Gaiters crash out of QUFL playoff race

MONTREAL – Quarterback Marc-Olivier Brouillette's three touchdown runs led the No. 10-ranked Montreal Carabins to a 56-6 victory over the Bishop's Gaiters in Quebec University Football League action today. The loss drops the Gaiters into fifth place, and out of the QUFL playoffs, while Montreal clinched fourth place, and will visit Laval next week. (Full release)

MEN’S BASKETBALL (2-8, 1-6 CIS)
Gaiters fall to McMaster, gain split at Hawk Challenge

Men's Basketball went 1-2 on their trip to Southern Ontario last weekend, losing 94-62 to McMaster and 97-76 to Laurier before rebounding to dump Laurentian 102-72 on Saturday.

THURSDAY: Bishop's 62 @ McMaster 94
The Gaiters fell 94-62 to the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton, Ont. on Thursday. The Marauders held a 36-32 lead at halftime, but broke the game open with a 10-0 run in the first three minutes of the third quarter. Rookie swingman Ryan Steele led the Gaiters with 16 points, while Hermon Tesfaghebriel netted 11.

FRIDAY: Bishop's 76 @ Wilfrid Laurier 97
On Friday, the Gaiters suffered a 97-76 defeat to the host Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in the opening game of the Golden Hawk Challenge in Waterloo, Ont. The Gaiters fell behind early on a 17-4 Hawk run in the first quarter and never recovered. Junior Nicolas led the Gaiters with 22 points, while Hermon Tesfaghebriel had a double-double, with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Selman added 11 points for Bishop's, who committed 23 turnovers, to the Hawks' 11.

SATURDAY: Bishop's 102 vs. Laurentian 72
On Saturday, the Gaiters
ended their six-game losing streak in resounding fashion, with a 102-72 romp over the Laurentian Voyageurs. The Gaiters put the game away with a 20-0 run in the second half. Seven players hit double figures for the Gaiters, led by Damon Thomas-Anderson's 16 points, and double-doubles from Hermon Tesfaghebriel and Tim Hunter, who each scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters have just one game this week, a home game against the RMC Paladins on Saturday at 7 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (3-3)
Gaiters sweep Carleton tournament

Women's Basketball swept through the Loeb Glebe Invitational in Ottawa, winning all three games and the Tournament Championship. Laure Pitfield was named Tournament MVP, while Katy Germain was named to the Tournament All-Star Team.

FRIDAY: Bishop's 73 vs. Guelph 50
On Friday, the Gaiters opened the tournament with a 73-50 win over the Guelph Gryphons. Laure Pitfield, led the Gaiters with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Katy Germain added 14 points - including four three-pointers - and rookie forward Annick Stephanny Charles scored 11. The Gaiters led 30-24 at halftime, and pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Guelph 22-11 in the frame. The win was the first for Gaiters' new head coach Alex Perno.

SATURDAY: Bishop's 73 @ UPEI 67 (OT)
On Saturday, the Gaiters won their second straight game in dramatic fashion, defeating the UPEI Panthers 73-67 in overtime. The Gaiters trailed by 15 points at halftime, and by 18 points late in the third quarter, but stormed back in the fourth quarter as they exploded for 21 points and held UPEI to only 5. Katy Germain forced overtime on a layup with no time remaining. In the extra session, the Gaiters took their second lead of the game at 66-64, and closed the game on a 7-0 run to ice the victory. Germain led the Gaiters with 22 points, while Amanda Piribauer had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, as well as a game-high three blocks. Laure Pitfield and Marie-Ève Lemoine scored 12 points each.

SUNDAY: Bishop's 58 @ Carleton 53
On Sunday, the Gaiters completed the sweep by downing the Carleton Ravens 58-53. The win was is the Gaiters' first tournament title in five years. Laure Pitfield led the Gaiters with 14 points, while Katy Germain scored 12 points with Amanda Piribauer and Mélanie Ouelllet-Godcharles scoring nine points each for the Gaiters, who grabbed 29 defensive rebounds in the game.

UP NEXT: Women's Basketball is off this week, but returns to action on November 7th, as they visit the UMass Minutewomen in Amherst, Mass.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (1-12-1, 8th QUSL)
Gaiters season ends with pair of losses to playoff teams

Women's Soccer closed out their season with a pair of losses to playoff-bound teams, as they fell 1-0 to McGill on Friday and 3-1 at Laval on Sunday

FRIDAY: McGill 1 @ Bishop's 0
The Gaiters closed out their home season with a 1-0 loss to the McGill Martlets on Friday. Alexandra Morin-Roberge's 42nd-minute goal was the only scoring. The Gaiters had the ball with a chance to tie in second-half stoppage time, but were unable to get a shot towards the net. Defender Susanne Raupach led the Gaiters' back line as they held McGill to only seven shots on goal. Gaiters' goalkeeper Kristen Cheng made six saves, while striker Stephanie Burnett was named the Gaiters' player of the game.

SUNDAY: Bishop's 1 @ Laval 3
The Gaiters closed out the season with a 3-1 loss to the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec City. Caroline Vaillancourt's goals in the 31st and 79th minute, along with Caroline Collin in the 49th minute found the net for Laval. The Gaiters got one back in the 83rd minute, as Stephanie Burnett scored her sixth goal of the season. Burnett was named the Gaiters' player of the game.

UP NEXT: Women's Soccer has concluded their 2008 season.

MEN’S RUGBY (4-2-0, 2nd QURU)
Gaiters down Concordia in playoff tuneup

Men's Rugby (4-2) closed out their regular season with a 24-20 win over the Concordia Stingers in Montreal. The Gaiters' pack led the way, accounting for all four tries, as fourth-year lock Jim Le Huguet put the ball down twice, with lock Ian Snowsell and flanker Ryan Lethbridge adding one each. Fly half Billy Murphy made two of four conversions to round out the Gaiters' scoring.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters host the Sherbrooke Vert & Or in a QURU Semifinal on Friday night. Kickoff at Coulter Field is set for 7 p.m.

LACROSSE (6-6-0, 5-4-0 CUFLA)
Gaiters return to action this week

Men's Lacrosse wound up their regular season with an 18-10 win over the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa.

SUNDAY: Bishop's 18 @ Carleton 10
The Gaiters came out strong, racing out to an 8-2 lead after the first quarter, and cruised to the victory. Josh Crone led the Gaiters with seven points (3G, 4A), while Mike Dube and Jackson Gair had six each.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters travel to McGill in a CUFLA Quarter-final game on Saturday. Faceoff at Forbes Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY (0-1-0)
Polar Bears resume with loss to local Senior side

The Polar Bears' season got underway on Friday, with a 5-1 home loss to the Estrie AA Senior team. The sole Polar Bears goal came from Sierra Laderoute. Maryse Richard made 47 saves on 52 shots in a losing effort for the Bears.

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears visit Stanstead College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
