This week’s Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Kyle Jones of the Football team and Casey Walsh of the Women's Soccer team.

Jones (Mississauga, Ont.) had a sack, a forced fumble, and an interception in addition to 4.5 tackles in the Gaiters' 33-25 win over Concordia on Saturday. Jones' fourth-quarter interception was the turning point of Saturday's victory over the then No.-5 Stingers.

Walsh (Ottawa, Ont.) was named the Gaiters' Player of the Game twice last weekend. The fourth-year forward stood out on Friday in the Gaiters' 3-0 loss to Sherbrooke, and led the Gaiters to a 1-1 draw at Concordia on Sunday afternoon

  • William Murphy - SH - Men's Rugby - Scored winning points on Sunday at Sherbrooke

Lee leads Gaiters to upset over No. 5 Concordia

LENNOXVILLE – Jamall Lee’s 189 yards rushing and two touchdowns led the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 33-25 win over the No. 5-ranked Concordia Stingers in Quebec University Football League action today. The 1,487 fans at Coulter Field saw the fourth-year running back, playing possibly his final home game as a Gaiter, pass Jesse Lumsden for fourth place on the CIS all-time rushing list as he kept the Gaiters’ playoff hopes alive. UP NEXT: The Gaiters travel to Montreal to face the Carabins on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Gaiters will advance to the playoffs with a win, and will be eliminated with a loss. The game will be televised live on RDS.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (1-6)
Gaiters swept at Carleton tournament

Men's Basketball dropped all three games to top-ranked opposition at the House-Laughton Invitational at Carleton University in Ottawa..

FRIDAY: Bishop's 53 @ Carleton 102
On Friday, the Gaiters fell 102-53 to the host Ravens. Carleton, who have won four of the past five CIS championships, raced out to a 17-1 lead and never looked back. Rookie Ryan Steele led the Gaiters with nine points, while Junior Nicolas added eight.

SATURDAY: UVic 69 vs. Bishop's 51
On Saturday, the Gaiters dropped a 69-51 decision to the Victoria Vikes. A 16-15 first-quarter lead for the Gaiters turned into a 41-24 halftime deficit. Junior Nicolas led the Gaiters with 14 points, while Hermon Tesfaghebriel picked up 7, and rookie Tim Hunter had seven points, five rebounds and two blocks.

SUNDAY: Laval 93 vs. Bishop's 80
On Sunday, a 26-point outburst from Junior Nicolas went for nought as the Gaiters closed out the tournament with a 93-80 loss to the defending Provincial champions from Laval. The Rouge et Or broke open a 31-30 game with a 9-0 run late in the second quarter. Hermon Tesfaghebriel scored 22 points for the Gaiters and grabbed seven rebounds, with Andrew Wright scoring eight points. Junior Nicolas was named to the Tournament All-Star Team

UP NEXT: The Gaiters visit McMaster on Thursday at noon, before travelling to Waterloo for the Wilfrid Laurier Invitational. The Gaiters will face the host Golden Hawks on Friday at 6 and the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday at 5.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (0-3)
Gaiters return to action this week

Women's Basketball was off last week, but returns to action this week at the Carleton Ravens Invitational in Ottawa. The Gaiters will face the Guelph Gryphons on Friday at 6 p.m., the UPEI Panthers on Saturday at 6 p.m., and the host Ravens on Sunday at 2 p.m.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (1-10-1, 8th QUSL)
Gaiters end losing streak with tie at Concordia

Women's Soccer suffered a loss on Friday, but broke their losing skid on Sunday with a 1-1 draw at Concordia

FRIDAY: Bishop's 0 @ Sherbrooke 3
The 10-man Gaiters fell 3-0 to the then-No. 8 Sherbrooke Vert et Or on Friday night. Camile Milan, Julie Leblanc and Marie-Emilie Perrault found the net for Sherbrooke. Avalon Henry was sent off in the 72nd minute for her second yellow card. Casey Walsh was named the Gaiters' player of the game.

SUNDAY: Bishop's 1 @ Concordia 1
The Gaiters ended their losing streak on Sunday with a 1-1 draw at Concordia, after the Stingers got on the board in the 5th minute, the Gaiters replied 15 minutes later as Stephanie Burnett scored her fifth goal of the year. Regular goalkeeper Becky Yates started at midfield in this game and picked up the assist. Striker Casey Walsh was again named the Gaiters' MVP.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters close out their season this week as they host the McGill Martlets (7-4-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. at Coulter Field and visit the Laval Rouge et Or (7-4-1) on Sunday in Quebec City.

MEN’S RUGBY (3-2-0, 2nd QURU)
Gaiters clinch home playoff game

Men's Rugby clinched a home playoff game with a 13-10 come-from-behind victory over the Sherbrooke Vert & Or on Sunday. The Gaiters suffered through an error-filled first half that saw the home side take a 10-0 lead. In the second half, the Gaiters were able to take control, playing a smarter brand of rugby. Frank Orlando put the Gaiters on the board in the 50th minute, while Charlie Campbell tied the game 10 minutes later. William Murphy's 72nd-minute penalty proved to be the game-winning points. The win guarantees the Gaiters second place in the QURU, and means they will host Sherbrooke in the league semifinal in two weeks.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters wind down the regular season as they visit the Concordia Stingers on Sunday at 1 p.m.

WOMEN’S RUGBY (0-5-1, 6th QURU)
Gaiters end season with exhibition loss to Carleton

Women's Rugby lost 24-10 to the Carleton Ravens in an exhibition game on Sunday afternoon. Fullback Josephine Perrin scored the  first try her career on a 35-metre breakaway, while scrum half Meredith Evans set up the Gaiters' second try with a 20-metre run that fell just 3 metres short of the goal. Flanker Sara Nicastro finally put the ball down in goal 10 minutes later.

The Gaiters have concluded their 2008 season.

LACROSSE (6-6-0, 5-4-0 CUFLA)
Gaiters return to action this week

Men's Lacrosse swept both games this weekend, putting themselves clearly into third place in the CUFLA East Division.

SATURDAY: Carleton 3 @ Bishop's 10
The Gaiters took a 4-0 lead after the first quarter, and led 7-2 at halftime as they cruised to the victory over the Ravens (1-7). Andy Barber (2G, 1A), Josh Crone (2G, 1A), Jimmy Southall (1G, 2A) and Jackson Gair (2G, 1A) led the Gaiters with three points each, while Mike Dube and Joseph Laleune (twice) also scored for the Gaiters. Brennan and Keegan Durovick split time in the Gaiters' net, with Brennan playing the first three quarters and picking up the win.

SUNDAY: Queen's 7 @ Bishop's 15
The Gaiters broke open a 6-6 game with an incredible nine goals in the fourth quarter to knock off the Golden Gaels and clinch at least third place in the CUFLA East Division. The Gaiters had come back from a 6-4 half-time deficit to tie the game after three periods, before scoring five times in the first six minutes of the fourth to put the game away. Overall, Josh Crone led the Gaiters with eight points (3G, 5A), while Mike Dubé finished with five points (2G, 3A). Brennan Durovick made seven saves in picking up his second win of the weekend.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters close out the regular season with a trip to Carleton on Sunday.
