This week’s Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Sean McLelland of the Men's Rugby team and Sue Magwood of the Women's Rugby team.

McClelland scored two tries in the Gaiters' 25-20 victory over the Concordia Stingers on Friday night. The veteran No. 8's two first-half tries capped some excellent work by the Gaiters' pack, and led Bishop's to a 20-10 lead by halftime.

Magwood, playing her first game in three weeks after suffering a shoulder injury, was the Gaiters' player of the game in their 34-7 loss to the Concordia Stingers on Friday evening. The second-year fly half led the Gaiters' on both ends of the pitch, and converted the Gaiters' sole try of the game.

  • Leanna Coates - L - Women's Rugby - Scored her first career try on Friday night.

The two-pronged running attack of Pascal Fils and Joseph Mroué led the Sherbrooke Vert & Or to a 37-19 victory over the No. 9-ranked Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Football League action on Saturday. A crowd of 8,226 saw Fils carry the ball 20 times for 166 yards and three touchdowns and Mroué run for 132 yards and a major. (Full release)

UP NEXT: The Gaiters host the Laval Rouge et Or this Saturday afternoon. Kickoff at Coulter Field is set for 1 p.m., and the game will be carried live on RDS.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (0-1)
Gaiters pre-season play restarts this week

Men's Basketball's preseason games begin in earnest this week, with three games, including one at home. On Thursday, the Gaiters will travel to Queen's to take on the Golden Gaels. On Friday, Bishop's will face the Montmorency Nomades in Laval at 7 p.m. Saturday will see the Gaiters host the National Elite Development Academy squad. Tipoff at the Mitchell Gym is set for 7 pm.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (0-0)
Gaiters open non-conference play in Edmonton

Women's Basketball opens their season with week with a trip to the Alberta Pandas Hoopfest in Edmonton. Alex Perno's first game in charge of the Gaiters will be on Friday at 6 p.m. (all times Mountain), as Gaiters take on the Trinity Western Spartans. They will meet the host Alberta Pandas on Saturday at 6 p.m., and close the tournament out on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. against the Regina Cougars.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (1-7-0, T-6th QUSL)
Gaiters shut out by Concordia

Women's Soccer lost their only game this week, 2-0 to the Concordia Stingers.

SUNDAY: Concordia 2 @ Bishop's 0
Women’s Soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to the Concordia Stingers on Sunday afternoon. Concordia used goals in the 52nd and 68th minutes to slip past the Gaiters. Goalkeeper Becky Walsh made seven saves in the Gaiters' net, while Bishop's sent four shots at the Concordia goal. Casey Walsh was named the Gaiters' player of the game.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters visit the UQAM Citadins (3-4-1) on Friday night, before returning home to host the UQTR Patriotes (1-7-0) on Thanksgiving Monday. Kickoff at Coulter Field is set for 1 p.m.

MEN’S RUGBY (2-2-0, 3rd QURU)
Gaiters down Sherbrooke at Homecoming

Two first-half tries by Sean McLelland led the Gaiters to the 25-20 victory over Concordia on Friday. McClelland's first try came in the 18th minute, and his second came ten minutes later, both keyed by strong play from the Gaiters' forwards. Pat Whelan and Matt Peireira also added tries for the Gaiters, while William Murphy hit one conversion and a penalty goal. Concordia pulled to within five points with nine minutes to play, but the Gaiters defence held out for the victory.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters have no league play, but travel to Fredericton, New Brunswick this weekend for an exhibition game against the UNB Ironmen, as part of their reunion festivities.

WOMEN’S RUGBY (0-4-1, 6th QURU)
Gaiters fall to Stingers

On Friday, the Gaiters lost 34-7 to the Concordia Stingers at Coulter Field. Concordia held most of the possession, and led 12-0 within the first ten minutes, and 29-0 at the half. Leanne Coates broke the shutout in the 78th minute, as the Gaiters took advantage of their first sustained possession of the game. Sue Magwood's conversion made the final score 34-7. Fullback Jennifer Rosenbaum led the Stingers with two tries, while Vanessa Ng, Lorrie-Ann McDonald, Melanie Tranchemontage added one each. Fly-half Erika Hamilton scored one try and two conversions to round out the scoring.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters close their season on Wednesday at 8:30 as they host the McGill Martlets

GOLF
Gaiters finish 9th at Provincials

Golf's final tournament of the season was the provincial tournament last weekend at the Île de Montréal Golf Club. The Gaiters finished with an aggregate score of 1033 for the tournament, and a grand total of 2,045 - good for ninth place overall. Dane Fitzpatrick led the Gaiters with an aggregate score of 327, putting him in a tie for 28th spot. James Laings was 34th at 332, Mathieu Desmarais was six shots back at 338, in 38th position.

LACROSSE (4-5-0, 3-3-0 CUFLA)
Gaiters sweep trip to Southern Ontario

Men's Lacrosse won a pair of games last weekend, as they downed the Oshawa Blue Knights 14-10 on Saturday night before dumping the Queen's Golden Gaels 20-5 on Sunday.

SATURDAY: Bishop's 14 @ Oshawa Blue Knights U-19 10
Mike Dubé led the Gaiters with seven points (5G, 2A) as the Gaiters downed the Blue Knights, while Jackson Gair added six points (5G, 1A) and Jimmy Southall (2), Andy Barber and Jesse Gattellaro also hit the net. Keegan Durovick played his first full game as the Gaiters' goalkeeper, making 16 saves.

SUNDAY: Bishop's 20 @ Queen's 5
The Gaiters returned to CUFLA play on Sunday with a demolition of the Queen's Golden Gaels. The Gaiters led 6-1 in the first and 8-1 at halftime as they cruised to the victory. Mike Dubé again led the Gaiters with nine points (6G, 3A), while Andy Barber added eight points (4G, 4A) and Jimmy Southall had seven (5G, 2A). Brennan Durovick made 11 saves for the Gaiters, who also won 20 of the 22 faceoffs in the game.

UP NEXT: Lacrosse is off this week, but returns to action on Oct. 18 and 19 as they host Carleton and Queen's.
