This week’s Bishop's Gaiters Athlete of the Week is Jamall Lee (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) of the Football team.

Lee led the Gaiters to a 45-21 win over the McGill Redmen on Friday, smashing through numerous records in the process. Lee ran 35 times for 391 yards, both QUFL records, and was only four yards short of the CIS record. He also set a league record for single-game all-purpose yards (405) and became the QUFL's all-time leading rusher.

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Steven Turner RB/KR - Football - Ran a punt back 65 yards for a touchdown on Friday at McGill
  • Stephanie Burnett - S - Women's Soccer - Gaiters' team MVP on Friday against Laval.
  • Dane Fitzpatrick - Golf - Gaiters' low man last weekend with a score of 159.
  • Harrison Maloney - DB - Football - Recorded 11 tackles, including 10 solo tackles, in Friday's win at McGill
  • Jimmy Southall - MF - Lacrosse - Scored seven points (4G, 3A) in Gaiters' win over Toronto on Saturday.
  • Susanne Raupach - D - Women's Soccer - Gaiters Player of the Game on Sunday at Montreal.
  • Jackson Gair - MF - Lacrosse - Recorded nine points (5G, 4A) in Gaiters' two games last weekend.

Lee smashes QUFL rushing records in Gaiters' win over McGill

MONTREAL – Fourth-year running back Jamall Lee (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) ran for 391 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 45-21 victory over the McGill Redmen in Quebec University Football League action tonight in Montreal.

Lee’s record-setting performance established him as the QUFL’s all-time leading rusher, with a career total of 3,642 yards. He broke the QUFL record of 3,435, previously held by Sherbrooke’s Joseph Mroué. He also jumped eight places on the all-time CIS rushing list, moving from 19th to 11th all-time, and is 104 yards away from 10th position(Dalton Smarsh, Alberta)

Lee also set a QUFL record with 35 carries in the game, breaking the old record of 32 held by Michael Sammon of McGill and Jeronimo Huerta-Flores of Laval. Lee also set a new QUFL record with 405 all-purpose yards. (Full release...)

UP NEXT: Homecoming is this Saturday, when the Gaiters face their crosstown rivals, the Sherbrooke Vert & Or. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m., and the game will be televised on RDS.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (1-6-0, T-4th QUSL)
Gaiters drop two to nationally-ranked teams

Women's Soccer lost a pair of games last week against nationally ranked opposition. On Friday, the Gaiters fell 3-0 to the No. 8-ranked Laval Rouge et Or, and on Sunday the Gaiters dropped a 5-0 decision to the No 1-ranked Montreal Carabins.

Women’s Soccer dropped a 3-0 decision to the No. 8-ranked Laval Rouge et Or. The Gaiters fell behind early on Caroline Vaillancourt's goal in the second minute, while Marie-Andrée Canuel put Laval up 2-0 in the 21st minute. Vaillancourt's scored her second of the game in the 55th minute to round out the scoring. Laval outshot Bishop's 18-4, and Gaiters' goalkeeper Becky Yates made four saves. The Gaiters' MVP was rookie striker Stephanie Burnett, who had several chances, but was unlucky not to score.

SUNDAY: Bishop's 0 @ #1 Montreal 5
The Gaiters were shut out on Sunday by the top-ranked Montreal Carabins, who have yet to concede a goal this season. Véronique Laverdière led the Carabins with two goals, while Véronique Maranda scored on a penalty and added three assists. The Gaiters were unable to break through Montreal's strong back line and direct much pressure towards the Montreal goal. Defensively, Susanne Raupach led the Gaiters, and was named the team's MVP of the game.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters travel to Montreal on Wednesday night to play the McGill Marlets (2-2-0) at Molson Stadium. Kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. Friday's Homecoming game will see the Gaiters hosting the UQAM Citadins at 4 p.m. at Coulter Field.

MEN’S RUGBY (0-2-0, T-3rd QURU)

off last week, Sherbrooke on tap

Men's Rugby had no league action last week, but instead celebrated the team's 25th anniversary with a reunion, including an "Old Boys" game on Saturday afternoon at Coulter Field. The Gaiters return to league play this weekend

UP NEXT: The Gaiters host the Sherbrooke Vert & Or  (2-0-0) in the annual Homecoming Game, this Friday at 8 p.m. at Coulter Field.

WOMEN’S RUGBY (0-2-1, T-5th QURU)
Gaiters shut out at Ottawa

Women's Rugby dropped their second straight game, as they fell 24-0 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday. Playing without Sue Magwood, last year's MVP, the Gaiters fell behind early as they misplayed an Ottawa penalty attempt, allowing the Gee-Gees to recover for their opening try. Ottawa led 21-0 at the half, but were held to only one penalty goal in the final 40 minutes. While the Gaiters had opportunities to score, they were unable to convert possession into points.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters host the Sherbrooke Vert & Or  (0-2-1) in the Homecoming Game, this Friday at 6 p.m. at Coulter Field.

GOLF
Gaiters ninth at Laval Invitational

Golf's second tournament of the year was the Laval Invitational at the De La Faune course in Quebec City. The Gaiters finished in ninth place with an aggregate total of 683. Dane Fitzpatrick was the low man for the Gaiters with an aggregate score of 159 (79-80), good for 22nd place overall. James Laing finished in 37th with a score of 167 (82-85), while Mathieu Demarais' 171 (81-90) was good for 47th spot. The sole Gaiters' female golfer, Alexi Drolet, finished in 22nd place with an aggregate of 193 (93-100).

UP NEXT: Golf is off this week. Their next tournament is the QSSF Championship, from Oct. 3-5 at the Ile de Montréal Golf Club.

LACROSSE (1-5-0, 1-3-0 CUFLA)
Gaiters split first homestand of the season

Men's Lacrosse split their first homestand of the season, cruising to an 13-7 win over Toronto on Saturday, before suffering an 8-7 loss at the hands of Trent on Sunday afternoon.

SATURDAY: Toronto 7 @ Bishop's 13
After a tight opening frame that ended 2-2, the Gaiters exploded for six unanswered goals in the second quarter, and cruised to the 13-7 victory. Jimmy Southall led Bishop's with seven points (4G, 3A), with Jackson Gair netting five (4G, 1A) and Joseph Laleune picking up four (1G, 3A). Brennan and Keegan Durovick split time in the Gaiters' net, with Brennan playing the first three quarters.

SUNDAY: Trent 8 @ Bishop's 7
A three-goal second quarter put the Excalibur up 5-2 at halftime. After Josh Crone brought the Gaiters back to within one remaining, the Gaiters had the ball with 15 seconds left, but could not find the net on their final shot. Jackson Gair led Bishop's with four points (1G, 3A), while Jimmy Southall had three goals and Andy Barber had two points (1G, 1A).

UP NEXT: Lacrosse plays their Homecoming game on Thursday night (Sept. 25) at Coulter Field against the McGill Redmen. Faceoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
