Weekly Release #3
September 16, 2008

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:

Stephanie Burnett

This week’s Bishop's Gaiters Athletes of the Week are Stephanie Burnett (Durham, Conn.) of the Women’s Soccer team and Pat Whelan (Ottawa, Ont.) of the Men’s Rugby team

Burnett led the Gaiters to a 3-1 win over the UQTR Patriotes in Trois-Rivières on Sunday afternoon. Burnett scored a hat trick, her first three career CIS goals, in the Gaiters' first victory of the season, and was unlucky not to score one or two more.

Whelan, a fourth-year flanker, was the best player on the pitch in Sunday’s 50-22 loss to the McGill Redmen. Whelan, the Gaiters’ captain, led the Gaiters as they rebounded from last week’s shutout loss at the hands of the Redmen.

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Dustin Burke – DE - Football - Made 5.5 tackles and had a 47-yard fumble return for a touchdown against Saint Mary’s on Saturday.

FOOTBALL (0-2, T-5th QUFL)
Football’s comeback falls short against No. 3 Saint Mary’s

Game Stats (PDF)

LENNOXVILLE - A second-half comeback attempt fell just short as the Bishop's Gaiters dropped a 35-27 decision to the No. 3-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies today at Coulter Field in Lennoxville, Que. A crowd of 1,973 saw the Huskies take a 27-7 halftime lead before Bishop's closed to within two points late in the game.

Tyler Schussler scored two first-half touchdowns for the Huskies, on a two-yard run in the first quarter, and a one-yard run. The game turned on the kickoff after Schussler's second touchdown, which put the Huskies up 20-7 with 1:42 to go in the second quarter. Gaiters returner Shantino Wilson fumbled the kickoff in the end zone, and the Huskies' Zach Agathos jumped on the ball to put Saint Mary's up by 20.

In the second half, after the Gaiters conceded a safety touch, the Bishop's defence started their comeback. At 8:05 of the third quarter, Huskies quarterback Ted Abraham made a bad lateral pass, which was picked up by the Gaiters' Dusty Burke, who blazed in 47 yards for the touchdown. Early in the fourth quarter, Kyle Jones picked off a Nathan Beeler-Marsman pass, and ran it back 20 yards to cut the margin to eight points at 29-21. (Full release)

UP NEXT: The Gaiters will visit the McGill Redmen (0-2) on Friday night. Kickoff at Molson Stadium is set for 7 p.m.

Sherbrooke's Josée Belanger scored in the 17th and 53rd minute, with both goals coming off through balls from midfield. Claudia Gosselin, Marie-Michelle Bibeau and Ann-Marie Brochu also scored for the Vert & Or, who moved to 1-0-0 on the season. The sole Bishop's goal-scorer was Laura Menard-Lee, who connected on a shot from 25 yards out in the 50th minute to close the gap to 2-1. (Full release)

SUNDAY: Bishop’s 3 @ UQTR 1
The Gaiters picked up their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon as they downed the UQTR Patriotes 3-1. The Patriotes took an early 1-0 lead, before the Gaiters stormed back with three unanswered goals by rookie striker Stephanie Burnett – her first career CIS goals, and the first hat trick for a Gaiter in recent memory.

Women's Soccer lost 6-0 in their opening match to the 6th-ranked Montreal Carabins. The game was tight defensively in the early going, and was tied at 0-0 at halftime. Véronique Maranda opened the scoring for Montreal in the 54th minute, and Eva Thauvenot made the score 2-0 nine minutes later. The Carabins added four more goals in the last 20 minutes to pull away to the 6-0 victory. Rookie goalkeeper Becky Yates was the Gaiters' player of the game.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters will host the Sherbrooke Vert et Or on Friday at 7 p.m. at Coulter Field. On Sunday, Women's Soccer visits the UQTR Patriotes at 1 p.m.

MEN’S RUGBY (0-2, T-3rd QURU)
Gaiters performance improves against McGill

Men's Rugby faced the McGill Redmen for the second straight week. However, the result was improved for the Gaiters. Bishop’s came out strongly and led 15-14 at the half. However, the lead was short-lived, as the McGill bench took over, pushing over two late tries as the Redmen pulled away for the 50-22 win. Billy Murphy scored 12 points for the Gaiters, while fullback Chris Sawers scored two tries.
