Gaiters crash out of QUBL
playoffs with 60-44 loss to UQAM February 25,

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop’s Gaiters' season came to a screeching halt tonight, as they were upset 60-44 by the UQAM Citadins in a Quebec University Basketball League women's semifinal. The Gaiters’ shooting proved to be their downfall, as they shot a paltry 28.1% (16-for-57) from the field, their lowest percentage in a CIS game this year. The Gaiters’ shooting woes started early, as after taking a quick 5-2 lead, they missed six consecutive field goal attempts midway through the first quarter. A pair of Amanda Piribauer (Kingston, Ont.) baskets ended the slump, and allowed the Gaiters to end the first quarter in a 12-12 tie. The Gaiters got off to a better start in the second, as a three-point play by Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) put the home side up 19-16 with 7:15 to go. However, the Gaiters’ shooting woes returned, as they went on a five-minute scoring drought. A layup by Ouellet-Godcharles with 2:13 to go ended the skid, but not before the Citadins had taken the lead for good. UQAM's Michelle Auger-Bellemare scored six straight points to end the half, and sent the Citadins into the break up 30-21. Early in the third, the Gaiters attempted a comeback. A Jessy Roy (Val d’Or, Que.) three-point play was followed up by five points from Piribauer as the Gaiters went on an 8-0 run to pull within three points at 32-29. However, UQAM’s Karine Boudrias responded with a three-pointer, her only points of the night, to stop the run. The Citadins put the game out of reach with a 13-4 run to end the quarter. The Gaiters could not put a run together in the fourth, as UQAM cruised to the victory. The Gaiters were led by Piribauer, who grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds and scored 13 points – her sixth double-double of the year. Ouellet-Godcharles was the only other Gaiter in double figures, as she scored 11 points, on 4-for-9 shooting. For UQAM, Irline Noël led with 16 points, while Auger-Bellemare scored 12, and Stephanie Youakim added 11. The Citadins shot 43.6% (24-for-55) from the field, while holding Bishop’s to only 28.1%. Bishop’s outrebounded UQAM 38-31, and committed 20 turnovers to UQAM’s 14. The Gaiters' normally-strong bench was held to only one point, while UQAM scored 22 bench points. For the Gaiters (13-12, 10-6 QUBL), the game draws a line under the careers of Piribauer, Wilson, Christelle Côté (Magog, Que.), Laure Pitfield (Ottawa, Ont.) and Sarah Back (Hamilton, Ont.), who are all graduating. The Citadins (20-8, 9-7 QUBL) will play the Laval Rouge et Or in the QUBL Championship this Saturday. -30- Défaite des Gaiters en demi-finale

2009 LENNOXVILLE - Les Gaiters vont se souvenir de ce match pendant longtemps car elles n’ont certainement pas joué leur meilleur basketball de l’année en encaissant un revers de 60-44 contre les Citadins de UQAM. Avec une faible récolte de neuf points au deuxième quart, les Gaiters ont rentrée au vestiaire avec un déficit de neuf points, 30-21 en faveur des Citadins. Par la suite, les Gaiters ont sortie très fort pour la deuxième demie en marquant huit points consécutives pour ramener la partie à seulement trois points d’écart. Ce fut probablement le seul point positif de ce deuxième demi puisque les Citadins n’ont par la suite jamais regardé par derrière, elles ne se sont jamais senties menacé par les Gaiters en maintenant une avance de plus de 10 points jusqu'à la fin de la partie. Pour les Citadins, mentions honorable a Irline Noël (16 points), Stéphanie Youakim (11 points) et Michelle Auger-Bellemare (12 points). Pour les Gaiters, Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (11 points) et Amanda Piribauer (13 points, 16 rebonds) ont contribué a l’offensive. Ce fut donc la dernière fois qu’on pouvait voir à l’œuvre Amanda Piribauer, Laure Pitfield, Christelle Côté, Robyn Wilson et Sarah Back puisqu’elles gradueront d’ici quelques mois. Les Gaiters terminent la saison avec une fiche de 13 victoires et 12 défaites. Les Citadins rencontreront le Rouge et Or de l’Université Laval ce samedi au championnat du Québec.
