HEADLINES Roundup: Women's Hoops wins Carleton tourney, soccer, rugby and lacrosse close out regular seasons 26 October 2008 LENNOXVILLE - A busy Sunday saw the Bishop's Gaiters in action on four fronts, recording victories in three of the four games. In Ottawa, Women's Basketball downed Carleton 58-53 to win the Loeb Glebe invitational, while Lacrosse dropped the Carleton Ravens 18-10. Meanwhile, in Montreal, Men's Rugby edged the Concordia Stingers 24-20, and in Quebec City Women's Soccer fell 3-1 to the Laval Rouge et Or. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Women's Basketball (3-3) won their third straight game at the Loeb Glebe Invitational as they downed the Carleton Ravens 58-53. The Gaiters went 3-0 and won the tournament, their first tournament win in five years. Laure Pitfield (Ottawa, Ont.) led the Gaiters with 14 points, and was named Tournament MVP. Katy Germain (Val d'Or, Que.) scored 12 points, and was named to the Tournament All-Star team. Amanda Piribauer (Kingston, Ont.) and Mélanie Ouelllet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) scored nine points each for the Gaiters, who grabbed 29 defensive rebounds in the game. Women's Basketball's next game is Friday, Nov. 7 when they will face the UMass Minutewomen in Amherst, Mass. MEN'S RUGBY: Men's Rugby (4-2) closed out their regular season with a 24-20 win over the Concordia Stingers in Montreal. The Gaiters' pack led the way, accounting for all four tries, as fourth-year lock Jim LeHuguet (Brockville, Ont.) put the ball down twice, with lock Ian Snowsell (Banff, Alta.) and flanker Ryan Lethbridge (Ottawa, Ont.) adding one each. Fly half Billy Murphy (Richmond, Que.) made two of four conversions to round out the Gaiters' scoring. The Gaiters finished second in the Quebec University Rugby Union, and will host the Sherbrooke Vert & Or in a QURU semifinal on Friday night at 7 p.m. WOMEN'S SOCCER: Women's Soccer (1-14-1) closed out the season with a 3-1 loss to the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec City. Caroline Vaillancourt's goals in the 31st and 79th minute, along with Caroline Collin in the 49th minute found the net for Laval. The Gaiters got one back in the 83rd minute, as Stephanie Burnett (Durham, Conn.) scored her sixth goal of the season. Burnett was named the Gaiters' player of the game. LACROSSE: Lacrosse (6-4) wound down their regular season with an 18-10 win over the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa. The Gaiters came out strong, racing out to an 8-2 lead after the first quarter, and cruised to the victory. Josh Crone (Cambridge, Ont.) led the Gaiters with seven points (3G, 4A), while Mike Dube (Brockville, Ont.) and Jackson Gair (Kilworthy, Ont.) had six each. The Gaiters finished 3rd in the CUFLA East Division, and will travel to McGill for the CUFLA quarterfinal. The game is set for Saturday, November 1 at 7 p.m. |
