............... HEADLINES Gaiters Roundup: Basketball splits tourney games, soccer falls to McGill 24 October 2008 LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters were in action on three fronts on Friday night. Women's Basketball picked up their first win of the year, 73-50 over Guelph, while Men's Basketball dropped a 97-76 decision to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks and Soccer fell 1-0 to the McGill Martlets in their final home game of the season. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Women's Basketball opened the Loeb Glebe tournament in Ottawa with a 73-50 win over the Guelph Gryphons. Laure Pitfield (Ottawa, Ont.), led the Gaiters with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Katy Germain added 14 points - including four three-pointers. Rookie forward Annick Stephanny Charles scored 11 points on 3 of 5 shooting. The Gaiters led 30-24 at halftime, and pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Guelph 22-11 in the frame. The win is the first for Gaiters' new head coach Alex Perno. The Gaiters (1-3) are in action on Saturday night at 6 p.m. against the UPEI Panthers. MEN'S BASKETBALL: Men's Basketball suffered a 97-76 defeat to the host Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in the opening game of the Golden Hawk Challenge in Waterloo, Ont. The Gaiters fell behind early on a 17-4 Hawk run in the first quarter and never recovered. Junior Nicolas (Montreal, Que.) led the Gaiters with 22 points, while Hermon Tesfaghebriel (Coquitlam, B.C.) had a double-double, with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Selman (Montreal, Que.) added 11 points for Bishop's, who committed 23 turnovers, to the Hawks' 11. The Gaiters (1-8, 0-6 CIS) play the second and final game of the tournament tomorrow at 5 p.m., as they face the Laurentian Voyageurs. WOMEN'S SOCCER: Women's Soccer closed out their home season with a 1-0 loss to the McGill Martlets. The only scoring in the 42nd minute, as an Alexandra Morin-Roberge shot from 18 yards out found the top corner of the net. The Gaiters had the ball with a chance to tie in second-half stoppage time, but were unable to get a shot towards the net. Defender Susanne Raupach (Meckenheim, Germany) led the Gaiters' back line as they held McGill to only seven shots on goal. Gaiters' goalkeeper Kristen Cheng made six saves, while Anne-Catherine Huot made both saves required of her to earn the shutout. Forward Magalie Kolker led McGill with seven shot attempts, and earned player of the game honours, while striker Stephanie Burnett (Durham, Conn.) was named the Gaiters' player of the game. The Gaiters (1-11-1) conclude their season on Sunday at 11 a.m., as they face the Laval Rouge et Or in Quebec City. |
