Gaiters split rugby doubleheader with Concordia

October 3, 2008

LENNOXVILLE - The Bishop's Gaiters earned a split of their rugby doubleheader tonight at Coulter Field. In the women's game, the Stingers downed Bishop's 34-7, while the Gaiters were 25-20 winners in the men's game.

In the women's game, Concordia held most of the possession, and led 12-0 within the first ten minutes, and 29-0 at the half. Leanne Coates broke the shutout in the 78th minute, as the Gaiters took advantage of their first sustained possession of the game. Sue Magwood's conversion made the final score 34-7. Fullback Jennifer Rosenbaum led the Stingers with two tries, while Vanessa Ng, Lorrie-Ann McDonald, Melanie Tranchemontage added one each. Fly-half Erika Hamilton scored one try and two conversions to round out the scoring.

In the men's game, two first-half tries by No. 8 Sean McClelland led the Gaiters to the 25-20 victory over Concordia. McClelland's first try came in the 18th minute, after a Concordia penalty gave the Gaiters possession ten yards out from goal and the Gaiters' pack allowed McClelland to ground the ball. His second came ten minutes later and was set up by a long run off a Concordia kickoff, followed by a multiple-phase possession keyed by the Gaiters' pack. Pat Whelan and Matt Peireira also added tries for the Gaiters, while William Murphy hit one conversion and a penalty goal. After taking a 25-10 lead after the 51st minute, Concordia pulled to within five points with nine minutes to play. Despite sustained pressure by the Stingers, the Gaiters defence held out for the victory.

Gaiters Women's Rugby is at home next Wednesday (Oct. 8) at 8:30 p.m. as they face the McGill Martlets at Coulter Field. Men's Rugby travels to New Brunswick next weekend for a set of exhibition games.
