Gaiters advance to QURU Championship for second straight year
(Version française ci-dessous)

October 31, 2008

LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop’s Gaiters Men’s Rugby (4-2) team clinched their second straight berth in the Quebec University Rugby Union championship game with an 11-9 win over the Sherbrooke Vert & Or (3-4). A raucous crowd of over 300 people at Coulter Field saw the Gaiters take an early lead and hold off a late Sherbrooke charge to preserve the victory.

The Gaiters got on the board in the tenth minute, as No. 8 Sean McClelland (Oakville, Ont.) put the ball down in the corner of the end zone. The remainder of the first half was largely stalemated, as neither team was able to generate much offence. The Gaiters got an opportunity late in the half, after Sherbrooke prop Mathieu Dufresne was sent to the sin bin in the 39th minute, but were unable to push the ball across before the halftime whistle.

The second half was choppier, with penalty calls ruling the day. The teams combined for five penalty goals in the final 40 minutes, with William Murphy (Richmond, Que.) connecting for Bishop’s in the 42nd and 52nd minutes, with Sherbrooke’s Jean-Michel Diorio replying in the 50th, 57th and 68th minutes.

After Diorio’s final penalty goal, the Gaiters held the ball for nearly ten minutes, and used a series of Sherbrooke penalties to get the ball into the Vert & Or end zone, but were unable to touch the ball down to put the game away. Sherbrooke took possession of the ball deep in their own end with approximately three minutes to go, but they could not advance the ball beyond midfield before the final whistle.

Head Coach Bill Robson was pleased with the performance of the Gaiters’ pack, and cited the work of Prop Nic Johnson (Toronto, Ont.), who was outstanding in the Gaiters’ scrums and lineouts, and was named the Man of the Match.

The Gaiters will play the winner of Sunday’s Concordia-McGill semifinal in the 2008 QURU Championship Game. If Concordia wins, the Stingers will visit Bishop’s on Friday, November 7. If McGill wins, the Gaiters will visit Montreal at a date and time to be determined.
