Bishop's Gaiters 2008-09 Year in Review by Sport Football started the season with
high expectations, with 19 starters returning from 2007’s breakout
season. However, the Gaiters’ difficult schedule, with six games against
ranked teams, proved to be a challenge. A pair of frustrating
season-opening losses to Concordia and Saint Mary’s put the team in an
0-2 hole. The Gaiters rebounded with a win over McGill, during which
Jamall Lee set a QUFL record with 391 rushing yards, and a 15-10
homecoming win over Sherbrooke. Needing to win their final two games to
return to the postseason, the Gaiters scored a 33-25 Seniors Day win
over Concordia, but a loss at Montreal sent the Gaiters out of the playoff race. The Gaiters again had five players
on the QUFL All-Star team, with repeat selections Jamall Lee and Steven
Turner being joined by Keith Godding, James Yurichuk and Tom Cumberbatch.
Lee was named a CIS First Team All-Canadian for the second straight
year, while Yurichuk was named a Second-Team All-Canadian. TEAM AWARDS: 2008 Women's Soccer Year in Review
Under new head coach Phil Ribaux, Women’s Soccer went into the season with the
hope of moving up the Quebec University Soccer League standings. Despite
a lineup loaded with rookies, Gaiters posted a pair of strong early
performances against Sherbrooke and Montreal, the eventual league
finalists. The Gaiters posted a 3-1 win over UQTR on Sept. 14, led by a
hat trick from rookie forward Stephanie Burnett. However, a midseason
slump sent the team towards the bottom of the league. The squad
rebounded with a tie against Concordia late in the year, and another
pair of close losses to playoff-bound McGill and Laval. Burnett led the
squad with six goals on the year, finishing tied for sixth in the QUSL. The team’s second indoor campaign saw the team develop over the course of the season, scoring a
tie against UQTR. Laura Keeler was named to the league’s Second All-Star team. TEAM AWARDS: 2008-09 Women's
Basketball Year in Review Under new head coach Alex Perno,
Women’s Basketball’s veteran lineup had high expectations for the
season. The team won the Loeb Glebe Invitational in Ottawa, their first
tournament win in five years, and had a 4-1 league record at Christmas.
After a successful trip to Cuba, the team struggled to find consistency
through January. In February, the team found their form again, finishing
the regular season winning four of their last five games, and ending up
second in the QUBL with a 10-6 record. The Gaiters hosted their first
playoff game in two years, but were upset by UQAM in the league semifinal. Katy Germain was named to the QUBL’s First All-Star Team, as she averaged 11.5 points per game. Jessy
Roy earned her second straight All-Star nod, with a spot on the Second Team,
while Laure Pitfield was the league’s nominee for both the Sylvia Sweeney and Tracy McLeod awards. TEAM AWARDS: 2008-09
Men's Basketball Year in Review Rod Gilpin’s squad got off to a rocky start, as they lost eight of
their first nine games. However, a 102-72 win over Laurentian in October
turned things around, and the Gaiters won five of their next six,
including a pair of thrilling home wins over McGill and UQAM. After
Christmas, the Gaiters remained in the playoff hunt with wins over
McGill , but a pair of last-second losses to UQAM would prove to be the
dagger. The Gaiters finished tied with McGill for fourth in the QUBL with a
5-11 record, but were eliminated from the playoffs on a tiebreaker. Junior Nicolas continued to shine, as he averaged 14.3 points per
game, and was named a First Team All-Star. Tim Hunter and D’Arcy Nash
were both named to the league’s All-Rookie team. Hunter averaged 5.6
points per game and led the team with 23 blocks, while Nash averaged 9.1
points per game. TEAM AWARDS: 2008
Men's Rugby Year in Review Bill Robson’s squad finished their first season at Coulter Field in second
place with a 4-2 record, and made their second straight provincial
final. After a pair of defeats by McGill, the Gaiters downed Sherbrooke
at Homecoming, won their last three games to clinch their first home
playoff game since 2005. In the league semifinal, the first rugby
playoff game at Coulter Field, the Gaiters held off Sherbrooke 11-9 to
advance to the league final. In the Championship game, the Gaiters were
unable to convert their scoring opportunities, and fell 21-0 to the
Redmen. The squad hosted their 25th reunion in September, and also toured the Maritimes in October. Four
Gaiters were named to the QURU All-Star team: flanker Pat Whelan, locks
James Le Huquet and Ian Snowsell as well as scrum half Brad Leung. TEAM AWARDS: 2008
Women's Rugby Year in Review Women’s Rugby came into the season hopeful of moving back up the league
standings. The Gaiters opened the season with a 5-5 tie at Sherbrooke,
however, later results did not follow. A shoulder injury to Sue Magwood,
last year’s team MVP, in the second game of the year caused her to miss
two weeks, and the team was shut out twice in her absence. The Gaiters
rebounded late in the year, with more competitive performances against
Concordia and McGill. The Gaiters closed the season with a 34-5 loss to
McGill, the first time Bishop’s scored points on the Martlets since Oct.
17, 2004. Scrum half Meredith Evans was named a league All-Star, while Eryn Hessian was named
the league’s Coach of the year. TEAM AWARDS: Under new
coach Andy Ochman, Golf opened the season finishing eighth at the
rain-shortened UQO Invitational in Montebello, led by a 78 from James
Laing and a 79 from Brent Gill. The team finished ninth at the Laval
Invitational and at the provincial championship in Montreal, Bishop’s
again finished in ninth place. Fitzpatrick was the Gaiters’ top
individual, with a four-round aggregate of 327, good for a tie for 28th
place overall, while Laing shot 332 and finished 34th. TEAM AWARDS: 2008-09
Women's Hockey Year in Review The Polar Bears posted their
second straight winning season, as they went 10-7-1 against teams from
Quebec, the U.S. and the Maritimes. The Bears went 3-1 and finished
third at their own tournament in November, and were fifth at the
Stanstead tournament in January. January also saw the team visit the
Maritimes, where they fell 5-1 to Mount Allison, a current AUS team, and
4-2 to UNB, who were varsity up until last season. The team finished the
year with wins in four of their past six games. Erika Cook led the team
offensively, while Maryse Richard continued her strong play in goal for
the Bears. TEAM AWARDS: |
