Gaiters' Pitfield honoured at Bishop's Convocation
LENNOXVILLE, May 30, 2009 – Laure Pitfield (Ottawa, Ont.) of the Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball team was one of the major prize-winners at the 180th Bishop's University Convocation ceremony, which was held today in Lennoxville. Pitfield was named the winner of the Hon. G. Howard Ferguson Cup, the Chief Justice Greenshields Prize and the Strathcona Foundation Plaque. The Hon. G. Howard Ferguson Cup is awarded to a graduating student who has made the greatest contribution to life of the university. Criteria for winning the award include high academic standing, proficiency in representing the university in athletics or other activities, and qualities of character and leadership. The Chief Justice Greenshields Prize is awarded to the winner of the Hon. G. Howard Ferguson Cup, while the Strathcona Foundation Plaque is awarded to the graduating intercollegiate athlete with the highest academic average. Pitfield, a 6' 3" forward and a three-year captain of the Gaiters, finished her five-year career at Bishop's earlier this spring. She was the QUBL Player of the Year, a First Team All-Canadian and Bishop's Athlete of the Year in 2006. After missing 2006-07 with a knee injury, she returned to the Gaiters lineup this season and was named the Quebec nominee two CIS women's basketball awards: the Sylvia Sweeney Award (academics, athletics & community service) and the Tracy McLeod Award (perseverance through adversity). Pitfield headlines the list of 26 Bishop's athletes who joined the Bishop's University Class of 2009 during the two ceremonies today.
In addition, six Gaiters were also named winners of underclassmen prizes. Leading the prize-winners was women's rugby player Katie Allen (Vankleek Hill, Ont.), who won the Charles A. Shearson Memorial Prize, which is awarded to a second- or third-year student with high academic standing, has represented the University in athletic and other activities and who shows qualities of character and leadership. Three of Allen's teammates were also honoured, as Alex Eastland (Peterborough, Ont.) won the Honorary President's Prize in English (U-1), Kristy Benz (Cochrane, Alta.) won the Undergraduate Prize in Liberal Arts and Pam Deanike (Port Perry, Ont.) won the Friends of Music Award. Justin Conn (Fredericton, N.B.) and Nick Poloniato (Hamilton, Ont.) of the football team were two of the three winners of the P.H. Scowen Memorial Prize in Entrepreneurship. |
