Gaiters fall sports preparations now underway

August 28, 2008

Training camps have begun for each of the Bishop's Gaiters fall sports, in preparation for their 2008 seasons. Rugby, soccer and lacrosse have all taken to their new home at Coulter Field with practice sessions this week, and a series of exhibition games and scrimmages set for this weekend, in preparation for the start of the regular season. Rugby and soccer start their regular season on the weekend after Labour Day (Sept. 5-7), while lacrosse follows a week later. A breakdown by sport follows:

Women's Soccer

Head Coach Darren Matthews has approximately 25 players in camp this year, including 10 returnees, as Gaiters' Women's Soccer prepares for their 14-game QSSF schedule. The Gaiters boast a strong crop of recruits, as they replace last year's players of the year - Chelsea Aboud and Lauren Proudfoot - who have both graduated. Women's Soccer scrimmaged against the Cégep de Sherbrooke last night, winning 3-0, and will play an exhibition game at Lyndon State College (Vt.) on Friday afternoon before returning home to scrimmage against the Cégep de l'Outaouais on Sunday. Sunday's scrimmage will take place on the Wilson Soccer Pitch at 1 p.m. Women's Soccer opens the regular season on Sunday, Sept. 7 as they host the Montréal Carabins at 1 p.m. at Coulter Field.

Men's Rugby

Bill Robson's provincial finalists started training camp with approximately 30 players, led by six of the team's starting forwards from 2007. The loss of several veterans, including Sam Campbell, Chris Caza-Pugh, Eric Sanderson and Adam Barrette, has sent the Gaiters into the reloading process. However, the squad's depth up front will key their quest to bring a seventh provincial rugby banner back to Lennoxville. Men's Rugby will play their annual scrimamge against Norwich University (Vt.) this Saturday at Coulter Field at 1 p.m. Men's Rugby opens the season on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. as they host the McGill Redmen, last year's QSSF champions, at Coulter Field.

Women's Rugby

Eryn Hessian goes into her third season at the helm with 23 players in camp, as they will look to move up the QSSF standings this season. The Gaiters will be led by Susan Magwood, who was a QSSF All-Star and the team's Player of the Year last season. Women's Rugby will host an exhibition game against the Trent Excalibur at Optimist Park on Friday at 4:15 p.m. Trent posted a 5-3 overall record (4-1 regular season, 1-2 playoffs) in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) league last season. On Saturday and Sunday the Gaiters will be at the Montreal Irish tournament. Women's Rugby opens their regular season on Sunday, September 7 at Sherbrooke, with the home opener coming on Friday, September 25, also against Sherbrooke.

Golf

Golf tryouts take place on Tuesday, September 2 at the Old Lennoxville Golf Club, starting at 8 a.m. New coach Andy Ochman will be hoping for an improved performance from this year's squad, led by last year's low man Alex Aubry. Golf's first tournament runs from September 6-7 in Montebello, Que.

Lacrosse

Damien Roy's club has 26 players in camp this year, including 14 returning players from last season's Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) semi-finalists. Leading the returnees is midfielder Jimmy Southall, who was last year's CUFLA Most Valuable Player. Lacrosse will play a round-robin tournament at McGill on Saturday, September 6, before opening the CUFLA season on Saturday, September 13 at the University of Toronto. The first home game for lacrosse will be on Saturday, September 20, also against Toronto.
