LENNOXVILLE, April 27, 2009 – Jamall Lee of the Bishop's University Gaiters football team has signed with the Carolina Panthers of the National Football League as an undrafted free agent. The signing came yesterday after the conclusion of the NFL's annual draft.

Lee, a three-time Bishop's Athlete of the Year and two-time First Team All-Canadian, becomes the second Gaiter to sign with an NFL team, following offensive lineman Mark Hatfield, who signed with the Miami Dolphins in 1995.

Lee, set two records at last month's Canadian Football League Evaluation Camp when he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds, and recorded a 44-inch standing vertical jump. Earlier this off-season, Lee became the first Canadian to compete in the annual Texas vs. the Nation All-Star Game.

Lee holds the Quebec University Football League career records for rushing yards (4,296) and rushing touchdowns (35), as well as the records for yards in a season (1,496 in 2007) and a single game (391 on Sept. 20, 2008). He won the CIS rushing title for the second straight year, posting 1202 yards on a league-record 182 carries and scoring ten touchdowns.

"I'm pleased to see that Jamall has gotten this opportunity. He is a great young man with exceptional ability," said Gaiters' Head Coach Leroy Blugh. "We are fortunate to have had him here for the last four years, and we know that he will go on to do great things."

“I’m excited to take my game to the next level. I’m thankful to Coach Blugh, Coach [Joey] Sabo and Coach [Tony] Addona for giving me this chance. Without coming here, none of this would have been possible,” said Lee. “Coming to Bishop’s was the best decision I’ve made. I have really enjoyed my time here.”

Lee will report to the Panthers’ mini-camp later this week.

LENNOXVILLE, 27 avril 2009 – Jamall Lee de l'équipe de football des Gaiters de l'Université Bishop's, a signé un contrat avec les Panthers de la Caroline dans la NFL.

Lee est le deuxième porte-couleurs des Gaiters à signer avec une équipe de la NFL. Le premier était Mark Hatfield, un joueur de ligne offensive, qui a signé un contrat avec les Dolphins de Miami en 1995.

Lee a établi deux nouveaux records au Camp d’Évaluation de la LCF ce mars, avec une course de 40 verges en 4,39 secondes et un saut vertical de 44 pouces. Lee est aussi devenu le premier Canadien à jouer dans la match d'étoiles « Texas vs. The Nation ».

Lee est le « recordman » du Québec en verges au sol en carrière (4 296) et touchés au sol en carrière (35), ainsi que les records pour verges au sol en saison (1 496 en 2007) et verges au sol dans un match (391, le 20 sept 2008). Lee a été le meilleur coureur au Sport Interuniversitaire Canadien pour la deuxième année consécutive en 2008, avec 1202 verges au sol sur 182 tentatives et dix touchés.

«Je suis heureux que Jamall reçoive cette opportunité. Il est un grand jeune homme avec des aptitudes exceptionnelles », a déclaré Leroy Blugh, l'entraineur-chef des Gaiters. « Nous sommes chanceux de l’avoir eu parmi nous au cours des quatre dernières saisons, et nous sommes persuadés qu'il va faire des exploits exceptionnels. »

« Je suis très heureux d’avancer au prochain niveau. Je suis reconnaissant envers Coach Blugh, Coach [Joey] Sabo et Coach [Addona] de m’avoir donné cette chance. Rien de tout cela n’aurait été possible sans mon passage ici », a déclaré Lee. « Venir à Bishop’s a été la meilleure décision que j’ai fait. J’ai vraiment apprécié mes quatre années ici. »

Lee assistera au mini-camp des Panthers ce week-end.
