LENNOXVILLE - Four Gaiters have been named to the East team for the 2009 East-West Bowl, to be held in London, Ont. on May 9. Representing the Gaiters this year will be quarterback Jesse Andrews (Pickering, Ont.), lineman Mike Berta (St. Mary's, Ont.) receiver Shawn Gore (Don Mills, Ont.), and running back/kick returner Steven Turner (Brampton, Ont.), all of whom are third-year players. The East-West Bowl is designed to showcase CIS players who will be eligible for the CFL draft after the following season. The East team features players from the Quebec University Football League, Atlantic University Sport, and Toronto, York, Ottawa and Queen's of the OUA, while the West squad is comprised of players from Canada West and the remaining OUA teams.

Andrews, a 6'1" 195 lb. Social Sciences major, has started 22 consecutive games at quarterback, and thrown for 3,596 career passing yards and 15 touchdowns. Last year, he threw for a career-high 1,501 yards in eight games, the fifth-highest total in the QUFL. Last year, he also ran 42 times for 260 yards, averaging 6.2 yards per carry.

Berta, a 6'2", 300 lb. Humanities major is a three-year starter on the Gaiters' offensive line. In 2008, he started eight games at right guard. Berta moved to that position from centre, where he started all eight games in 2007. In 2008, the Bishop's offensive line allowed 16 sacks, while allowing Gaiters' rushers to average 178.6 yards per game. The East-West Bowl will be a homecoming for Berta, as the former London Falcon (OVFL) will be playing 43 km from his home in St. Mary's, Ontario.

Gore, a 6'1" 195 lb. Social Sciences major, has been a three-year starter at slotback for the Gaiters. In 21 career games, he has caught 40 passes for 625 yards, an average of 29.8 yards per game. In 2008, he caught 12 passes for 232 yards despite missing three games due to injury. His 19.3 yards per catch led the QUFL, and his average of 46.4 yards per game was ninth in the league.

Turner, a 5'10" 185 lb. Social Sciences major, is a two-time QUFL All-Star kick returner and started at slotback for the Gaiters in 2008. He has amassed a career total 1,098 yards on kick and punt returns, including four touchdowns. In 2007, he set a CIS record with three kickoff return touchdowns, and averaged 66.8 yards per kickoff return. In 2008, he scored his first career punt return touchdown, and averaged 9.2 yards per return. He also caught 19 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns.

The 2009 East-West Bowl is scheduled for May 9, 2009 at 1 p.m. at TD Waterhouse Stadium in London, Ont.
