Football: Gaiters crash out of QUFL playoff
race October 25, 2008 MONTREAL – Quarterback
Marc-Olivier Brouillette's three touchdown runs led the No. 10-ranked
Montreal Carabins to a 56-6 victory over the Bishop's Gaiters in Quebec
University Football League action today. The loss drops the Gaiters into
fifth place, and out of the QUFL playoffs, while Montreal clinched
fourth place, and will visit Laval next week. The Carabins put the game away during a five-minute
stretch around halftime, when they extended a 15-6 lead to 29-6. A
Brouillette pass to Kevin Rivet and the first of his scoring runs had
combined to give Montreal the nine-point lead with two minutes to go in
the second quarter. The Carabins drove 86 yards in seven plays, despite
taking five penalties for 50 yards (including three for Objectionable
Conduct) during the drive, capped by Hantz Boursiquot's 3-yard scoring
run, to take a 22-6 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, the Carabins put the game
away as Brouillette scored his second major on a 45-yard run, two plays
after a Keith Godding fumble had given the Carabins the ball in Bishop's
territory. A fourth-quarter fumble set up the quarterback's third major
of the day, and Kevin Rivet's second touchdown catch of the day put the
game firmly beyond doubt, while three Pierre-Paul Gélinas field goals
closed out the Montreal scoring. The Gaiters were led by fourth-year running back
Jamall Lee, who had 20 carries for 96 yards. He finishes the season with
182 carries, a new QUFL record, for 1202 yards. Lee finishes the season
as the CIS rushing champion for the second straight year, and has won
his third straight QUFL title. Jesse Andrews was 4-of-10 passing, with one
interception, for 70 yards, while Jake Ruddy, making his second career
appearance, was 0-for-2. Josh Maveety was good on both of his field goal
attempts, including a career-long of 43 yards. Defensively, James
Yurichuk led the Gaiters with 7.5 tackles and a fumble recovery, while
Kyle Jones recorded eight tackles, including one for a loss. For Montreal, Brouillette completed 15 of 20 passes
for 246 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 109 yards and three majors.
Hantz Boursiquot had 23 carries for 149 yards and a touchdown, while
Kevin Rivet caught six passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns. The Carabins outgained Bishop's 586 yards to 152,
as Bishop's recorded only 11 first downs to Montreal's 23. Turnovers
plagued the Gaiters today, as they committed a total of five (four
fumbles, one interception), while Montreal turned the ball over only
once. The Gaiters committed seven penalties for 53 yards, while the
Carabins were flagged 11 times for 110 yards. The Gaiters (3-5) finish fifth in the QUFL, and
miss the playoffs for the first time in two years, while Montreal (5-3)
finishes fourth, and will play Laval (8-0) in a QUFL Semifinal on
Saturday. -30- NOTES: The win is Montreal's
second straight against Bishop's, but the Gaiters still hold a 9-6
all-time lead ... 56 points is the most scored by Montreal in a game
against Bishop's, beating the previous record of 53 set on Oct. 2, 2004
... Keith Godding had one catch for 2 yards today, and finishes the
season with 38 catches for 607 yards ... Today's game marked the end of
the CIS careers for fourth fifth-year players: defensive end Dusty
Burke, linemen Tom Cumberbatch and Steven Mabee and wide receiver Keith
Godding. SUMMARY: Bishop's
