Football: Lee leads Gaiters to upset over No.
5 Concordia October 18, 2008
LENNOXVILLE – Jamall Lee’s 189
yards rushing and two touchdowns led the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 33-25 win
over the No. 5-ranked Concordia Stingers in Quebec University Football
League action today. The 1,487 fans at Coulter Field saw the fourth-year
running back, playing possibly his final home game as a Gaiter, pass
Jesse Lumsden for fourth place on the CIS all-time rushing list as he
kept the Gaiters’ playoff hopes alive. After Concordia staked out a 6-0
lead, Lee put the Gaiters up 7-6 with a 68-yard rush on the last play of
the first quarter. Lee’s second major came in the third quarter on a
one-yard dive that capped a five-play, 70 yard drive for the Gaiters and
put Bishop’s up 22-9. Concordia came back to tie the
game at 25-25 on a four-yard run by Mike Donnelly at 10:06 of the third
and a 63-yard pass from Liam Mahoney to Cory Watson at 2:16 of the
fourth. The game turned with nine
minutes left, as Mahoney was intercepted by Kyle Jones on the Bishop’s
1-yard-line. The Gaiters drove 109 yards in eight plays, capped by a
26-yard Keith Godding reception to take a 32-25 lead. A Josh Maveety
single on the ensuing kickoff put the Gaiters up by eight. Concordia had two chances to
score in the final three minutes, but an Andrew Collymore interception
snuffed out the first drive, and a Nick Poloniato knockdown on the
game’s final play sealed the victory. Lee finished the day with 26
carries for 189 yards. He now has 4,200 career rushing yards, beating
Lumsden’s total of 4,138. Lee leads the CIS with 1106 yards this year. Godding made with seven catches
for 109 yards, his fourth 100-yard game of the season, while Shawn Gore,
back after missing three games due to injury, had four catches for 76
yards. Quarterback Jesse Andrews went 15-for-24 for 212 yards with one
interception and one touchdown. Defensively, the Gaiters were led by
fourth-year linebacker Kyle Jones, who had a sack, a forced fumble, and
an interception. Poloniato made one interception (his fifth of the
season) and broke up three passes. Maveety was good on two of three
field goal attempts and also scored two singles, while Concordia’s Rene
Paredes was also 2-for-3 on field goals, and scored one single. Each
team conceded two safety touches to round out the scoring. For the Stingers, quarterback
Liam Mahoney went 18-for-45 for 283 yards with one touchdown and three
interceptions, and was held to 34 yards rushing. Receiver Cory Watson
made 11 catches for 202 yards. Running back Cedric Ferdinand ran for 52
yards on seven carries, as the Gaiters’ defence restricted Concordia to
78 rushing yards, their lowest total of the season. Bryan Charleau led
the Stingers’ defence with 8 tackles, while Ricky Zieba had an
interception and a sack. The Stingers outgained Bishop’s
356 yards to 355, and recorded 23 first downs to the Gaiters’ 19.
Concordia turned the ball over four times, to the Gaiters’ one. The Gaiters (3-4) travel to
Montreal (4-3) next week, in a game that will decide fourth place in the
QUFL. The Stingers (4-3) will host Sherbrooke (5-1) next week. Kickoff
for both games is at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 25). -30- NOTES: This was the first win

win is also the first for Defensive Coordinator Ray Gagnon in four tries

now one touchdown shy of the all-time QUFL record of 36 (Pierre-Luc Yao,
