SHERBROOKE – The two-pronged running attack of Pascal Fils and Joseph Mroué led the Sherbrooke Vert & Or to a 37-19 victory over the No. 9-ranked Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Football League action today. A crowd of 8,226 saw Fils carry the ball 20 times for 166 yards and three touchdowns and Mroué run for 132 yards and a major.

Fils broke the game open with two touchdowns 2:19 apart in the third quarter. At 1:15 of the third, Sherbrooke conceded a safety touch to put Bishop’s up 12-10. The field position gamble paid off, as the Gaiters went two-and-out, giving Sherbrooke a short field. Fils’ 12-yard run at 6:26 capped a 56-yard drive. After another two-and-out, Sherbrooke took the ball on the Bishop’s 27, and Fils’ 18-yard score came two plays later at 8:45. The Gaiters put together an eight-play drive after the second touchdown, but it was snuffed out by quarterback Jesse Andrews’ fumble at the Sherbrooke 18.

The Gaiters’ Steven Turner caught a career-high seven passes for 83 yards and a touchdown, while Kheon Clarke had three catches for 44 yards and a touchdown. Jamall Lee gained 122 yards on 23 carries, while Andrews was good on 18 of 26 passes for 198 yards with two touchdowns, one interception and a fumble. Josh Maveety made his only field goal attempt, a 13-yarder in the second quarter.

Defensively, the Gaiters were led by Harrison Maloney, who recorded 8.5 tackles and a forced fumble, while Kyle Jones made eight tackles, including one sack.

Sherbrooke quarterback Jean-Philippe Shoiry went 13-for-21 for 141 yards with two interceptions. William Dion was good on all three of his field goal attempts to round out the Vert & Or scoring.

Sherbrooke outgained Bishop’s 432 to 328, and recorded 28 first downs to the Gaiters’ 20. Penalties again plagued the Gaiters, as they were flagged 17 times for 177 yards, with Sherbrooke being whistled 16 times for 114 yards.

The win puts Sherbrooke (4-1) into sole possession of second place in the QUFL behind undefeated Laval. The Gaiters (2-3) fall into a tie for fourth with Montreal. Both Bishop's and Sherbrooke are at home next Saturday (Oct. 11), as the Gaiters will host No. 1-ranked Laval at 1 p.m., while the Vert & Or host Acadia at 4 p.m. The Gaiters’ game will be carried on RDS.
