Gaiters downed by Vert & Or October 4, 2008
SHERBROOKE – The two-pronged
running attack of Pascal Fils and Joseph Mroué led the Sherbrooke Vert &
Or to a 37-19 victory over the No. 9-ranked Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec
University Football League action today. A crowd of 8,226 saw Fils carry
the ball 20 times for 166 yards and three touchdowns and Mroué run for
132 yards and a major. Fils broke the game open with
two touchdowns 2:19 apart in the third quarter. At 1:15 of the third,
Sherbrooke conceded a safety touch to put Bishop’s up 12-10. The field
position gamble paid off, as the Gaiters went two-and-out, giving
Sherbrooke a short field. Fils’ 12-yard run at 6:26 capped a 56-yard
drive. After another two-and-out, Sherbrooke took the ball on the
Bishop’s 27, and Fils’ 18-yard score came two plays later at 8:45. The
Gaiters put together an eight-play drive after the second touchdown, but
it was snuffed out by quarterback Jesse Andrews’ fumble at the
Sherbrooke 18. The Gaiters’ Steven Turner
caught a career-high seven passes for 83 yards and a touchdown, while
Kheon Clarke had three catches for 44 yards and a touchdown. Jamall Lee
gained 122 yards on 23 carries, while Andrews was good on 18 of 26
passes for 198 yards with two touchdowns, one interception and a fumble.
Josh Maveety made his only field goal attempt, a 13-yarder in the second
quarter. Defensively, the Gaiters were
led by Harrison Maloney, who recorded 8.5 tackles and a forced fumble,
while Kyle Jones made eight tackles, including one sack. Sherbrooke quarterback
Jean-Philippe Shoiry went 13-for-21 for 141 yards with two
interceptions. William Dion was good on all three of his field goal
attempts to round out the Vert & Or scoring. Sherbrooke outgained Bishop’s
432 to 328, and recorded 28 first downs to the Gaiters’ 20. Penalties
again plagued the Gaiters, as they were flagged 17 times for 177 yards,
with Sherbrooke being whistled 16 times for 114 yards. The win puts Sherbrooke (4-1)
into sole possession of second place in the QUFL behind undefeated
Laval. The Gaiters (2-3) fall into a tie for fourth with Montreal. Both
Bishop's and Sherbrooke are at home next Saturday (Oct. 11), as the
Gaiters will host No. 1-ranked Laval at 1 p.m., while the Vert & Or host
Acadia at 4 p.m. The Gaiters’ game will be carried on RDS. -30- NOTES: The all-time series
between the Gaiters and Vert & Or is now tied 6-6, with the home team
winning the last four meetings … Kyle Jones’ 307 punting yards gave him
8,049 for his career … Jesse Andrews became a career 3,000-yard passer
on Saturday … Nick Poloniato’s interception was his fourth in five games
this season. He has an interception in 11 of his past 13 games, dating
